Canopies, buckets of ice water, and cold towels couldn't offset the Texas like heat that hovered over Plainwell on Tuesday evening as Stevensville-Lakeshore took advantage of a Marshall mistake to hang on to a 2-0 victory in the state regional semi-finals. With the temperature at 93 degrees with a heat index of over a 100 degrees at game time, both teams struggled to create any consistent offensive attack. Both teams pride themselves on their defense and it was obvious early that one goal might decide the outcome. That one goal came with 15 minutes in as Marshall failed to clear a Lakeshore corner kick and Lakeshore poked the misplayed ball passed Ashley Esselink into the back of net for the game winner. "We have done very well defending corners this year," said Coach Harkey. "So it was a little disappointing to give up a goal in that situation. You just can't make those mistakes against good teams. They will capitalize."
For much of the second half neither team could generate any offensive threats but as time wore on, Marshall, sensing the urgency of the situation, began to press forward. Marshall had several opportunites late in the second half and with just over 4 minutes left Jules Hinske played a ball forward to Meg Dubois who played it into the box. Freshman Lauren Feasel was taken down and a penalty was called. Marshall's Meg Dubois, who is usually spot on with her penalty kicks, took the penalty and it was high over the crossbar. "I feel terrible for Meg. She has been very consistent with her PK's throughout her career," said Harkey. "But I told her after the game that is not why we lost this game. We did not play as well as we had in districts. It's hard to come back from two very emotional wins. We've had a great season and this team has accomplished a lot and has left it's mark. They are a part of Marshall history." Marshall won a share of the SMAC East for only the second time and won its second district title and first in 11 years and played some outstanding soccer throughout the season. "This team played soccer the way it is supposed to be played and I am very proud of all the girls. The graduating seniors should be very proud of their accomplishments and what they have contibuted to this program. They will be missed." Thank you to seniors Kate Belew, Meg Dubois, Tori Elyea, Ashley Esselink, Courtney Gallihugh, Jules Hinske, Emily Peters, Olivia Roberts, Carson Tobias, Carly Weck. Marshall finished the season at 12-9-1.

District Finals
Marshall 1 Mattawan 0
On a brutally hot, sunny afternoon, with the temperature at game time of 85 degrees, Marshall beat Mattawan 1-0 to win its first district title in 11 years. With 9:08 left on the game clock, Katie Slaght scored the game winner for the second straight game, after a beautiful slotted ball from freshman Lauren Feasel.
Despite the heat both teams came out with a lot of energy in the first half with Mattawan outplaying Marshall throughout. Mattawan was winning balls and had several shots but only one was on goal. "I thought Mattawan took it to us early," said coach Harkey. "They were winning all the 50-50 balls and created the better chances." Marshall's best chance game midway through the first half when Carly Weck got down the right wing and crossed a nice ball to the 6 yard line and Katie headed it just over the cross bar. The half ended 0-0.
Marshall came out in the second half a different team. Marshall controlled most of the play and began to wear down Mattawan. "At halftime we talked about picking up our level of play," said Harkey. "Our girls responded and we played soccer in the second half. We played with more purpose and we played a more possession game. We put more pressure on their defense." As the game wore on the Mattawan defense began to wear down and Marshall seized on the opportunity. With just over 9 minutes to play, Vicki Sell won a ball at midfield and played a ball through to Lauren. Lauren received the ball on the right side of goal in the box and took a touch to goal. As the defense dropped Lauren slotted the ball to Katie and Katie hammered it passed the keeper for the game winner. Mattawan was not done as they finished the game putting a lot of pressure on the Marshall defense but Marshall held them off for their first district title since 2000. "That was a very intense and exciting ending. Mattawan responded well to our goal and really put us on our heels at the end," said Harkey. "Our girls have worked very hard all year and we accomplished a goal that we set at the beginning of the season, to win districts. We now have a new goal and that is be ready for Tuesday." Marshall is 12-8-1 on the season and will play Stevensville-Lakeshore in the regional semi-finals on Tuesday at 5:00pm at Plainwell High School.

District Semi-Finals
Marshall 1 Loy Norrix 0
On a beautiful late spring evening with 70 degree temperatures, a sunny blue sky, and a slight breeze Marshall and Norrix took to the field for the right to play in the district 18 finals on Saturday. In a fairly evenly played first half both defenses controlled much of the game with neither team team getting any real chance at goal. Katie Slaght, Courtney Gallihugh, and Carly Weck each had a shot but could not get it on goal. Norrix's bext chance came on a corner as the Marshall defense lost its mark but the Norrix attacker misplayed the volley and it was cleared away by the Marshall defense. The half ended 0-0. "Going into halftime we were confident in our play," said Coach Harkey. "We needed to play with a little more composure especially in the box but we all expected to get some chances on goal in the second."
Marshall began to have have some success early in the second half and with 13 minutes played Carly got by her defender down the right wing and played a nice ball to the front of the goal where Katie hammered it into the back of the net for the game winner. Marshall continued to put pressure on the Norrix defense and 10 minutes later Courtney hit the crossbar. Marshall held the lead and with 10 minutes left Norrix began to move players forward to find the equalizer. Despite some scary moments Marshall's defense and keeper Ashley Esselink held their ground and Marshall came away with the 1-0 win. "This was a good win for us," said Harkey. "Norrix had been playing well down the stretch and we knew we would have to play well to win. It's been awhile since we have played for a district championship and we are all very excited. We will have to play even better on Saturday if we want to beat a very good Mattawan team. It's going to be fun." Marshall is 11-8-1.

Marshall 4 Parma Western 1
On a cool, crisp evening and the excitement of parent night in the air, Marshall slammed the door on its 4 game losing streak with a win vs Western 4-1. Carly Weck led the way with 3 second half goals as Marshall finally regained its edge on a night when both parents and seniors were honored before the game. Seniors Kate Belew, Meg Dubois, Ashley Esselink, Courtney Gallihugh, Jules Hinske, Emily Peters, Olivia Roberts, Carson Tobias, and Carly Weck played on the Marshall Soccer Complex field for the last time and played very well indeed. Western scored first on a defensive lapse 17 minutes into the game but unlike the past two weeks Marshall held it together and responded 5 minutes later as Courtney took a ball from Vicki Sell and bounced one of the far post for the 1-1 tie. That's 20 push ups for the coach. After that neither team could break the defenses and the half ended 1-1. "We played outstanding the first 20 minutes playing possession soccer and moving the ball around the field," said Coach Harkey. "Western stepped up their pressure late in the half and we began to play kick and run and that's just not our style. We talked at the half about playing our game and playing more simple in the second half."
Marshall succeeded with that game plan in the second half and 16 minutes in Carly began her scoring spree after Vicki worked hard in the middle and was credited with the assist. 6 minutes later Lauren Feasel attacking the ball with her head played a ball into the box and Carly finished off her second goal for the 3-1 lead. With 5 minutes left Carly scored her third and final goal as Carson chipped a ball to the face of the goal and Carly punched it in for the 4-1 win. "This game has been a long time coming," said Harkey. "It was nice to see everyone playing with such enthusiasm and togetherness again. I think we are back on track coming on a night when we celebrate our parents and our seniors. It was a nice evening." Marshall ends it regular season at 10-8-1.

Marshall 0 St Joe 1
After a two week layoff Marshall's soccer team finally made an appearance on Wednesday and played a very good soccer game. Marshall outplayed and outshot St Joe 10 to 2 in the first half but just could not find the net. St Joe's Keeper made several good saves to keep them in the game at 0-0 at the half. Katie Slaght had 5 shots herself and Ashley Esselink made a nice save on St Joe's only shot on goal. "We played very good soccer in that first half," said Coach Harkey. "It was nice to see us playing with enthusiasm."
St Joe came out early and took some of the play away from Marshall but Marshall maintained its composure and wrestled the momentum back. Marshall continued to attack the St Joe defense and Carly Weck continued to work the ball in from the right wing. Marshall's defense was back in form for much of the game but with 11 minutes left St Joe got behind the defense for the game winner. Marshall had several opportunities late but for the second straight game could not find the finishing touch. "If there was a loss that I can live with it is this one," said Harkey. "For the first time in two weeks we played with an edge and a passion and we played soccer the way we know how. We didn't get the result we wanted but I got my team back. It was a welcome sight." Marshall finishes the regular season at home for parent's night on Friday vs Parma Western. Marshall is 9-8-1

Marshall 1 K-Central 4
Spring fever was in full bloom at the Marshall Soccer Complex on Monday night as Marshall lost to K-Central 4-1 for its third straight loss. Marshall had three good opportunities early but couldn't convert and K-Central scored 3 goals in a 10 minute span and another late in the half for a commanding 4 goal halftime lead. "We allowed K-Central's best player to beat us in the first half. She went through our defense at will and as a result we found ourselves down by 4," said Coach Harkey. "Just a very disappointing performance."
Marshall played with more energy in the second half and finally broke through with 20 minutes left as Katie Slaght finished off one of Carly's classic crosses. But K-Central dug in its heels and did nt allow Marshall in again. "I am looking for some colder weather. Spring fever has not been good to us," said Coach Harkey. Marshall faces St Joe on Wednesday for 7th place in the SMAC. Marshall is now 9-7-1.

Marshall 1 Mattawan 2 (2OT)
In the first round of the SMAC league tournament, Mattawan scored on a brilliant header by Alysha Johnson off a corner to beat Marshall with 5 minutes left in the second overtime. With the loss Marshall moves will K-Central on Wednesday who lost to Portage Central 4-1. Both Marshall and Mattawan came out energized to start the game and Marshall played some good soccer in the first 20 minutes. Mattawan had the first chance on goal within 5 minutes as Johnson received a ball in the box but Ashley Esselink pushed it over the bar. 3 Minutes later Carly Weck got behind the Mattawan defense and was taken down in the box. Meg Dubois drilled the penalty kick for the early 1-0 lead. Both teams then settled in for a defensive struggle. "We started out very well tonight," said Coach Harkey. "We played some very good, simple soccer, keeping possesion, passing it around, creating some chances. Mattawan plays hard and physical and I thought early we did well in neutralizing that style of play."
Mattawan came out much more aggressive in the second half and put more pressure on the Marshall defense. Twelve minutes in Kearsten Dobbs fought hard for a ball in the Marshall third and lofted a ball to the far post just out of reach of Ashley to draw even 1-1. Both teams went back and forth and both defenses held strong to force overtime. "I thought we lost our focus in the second half and got caught up in playing too many balls in the air," said Harkey. "We got away from that possesion type soccer that we are best at and we have to credit Mattawan for that. They were very aggressive and took us out of our game."
With 5 minutes left in the second overtime Mattawan won a corner and Johnson ran to the near post and won a header that went back out to the corner and on a questionable call, at least by the Marshall players, Mattawan was given another corner. Mattawan's Maley Wright then put another perfectly placed corner, to the exact spot of the first one, and Johnson did not miss on her second attempt. "That was just a game winning play by Alysha Johnson", said Harkey.

Marshall 3 Jackson High 4
Marshall's 6 game, 508 minute shut out streak came to a grinding end as Jackson scored two goals in the first 3 minutes on their way to the 4-3 win at Jackson. On Jackson's first possesion Annie Aubrey got behind the Marshall midfielders and put the ball on Blanche Turpel's foot and Turpel beat Ashley Esselink one v one for the very early 1-0 lead. Less than 2 minutes later more of the same, as Aubrey broke down the Marshall defense again and for 2-0. Marshall showed little life in the first half but did manage to find Lauren Feasel in the box mid way through the half to cut the lead to 2-1 but that was it. "This was the first game of the year where we just did not come ready to play", said Coach Harkey. "And we paid the price. Jackson is a good squad and they took advantage of our lack of effort."
Jackson scored two more goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half to build what seemed an insurmountable lead but something inside the Marshall players finally woke up. Marshall actually begin to play with some emotion and broke through as Tierra Orban finished off a corner by Carly Weck to cut it to 4-2 with still 21 minutes to play. Marshall began to show it's real persona and began to put a lot of pressure on the Jackson defense. Sydney Reichenbaugh played ball after ball into the box and after a take away Jules Hinske served a ball to the front of the box where Katie Slaght put it away with less than 2 minutes left to cut it to 4-3. Jackson gave it back to Ashley and she punted a nice ball to midfield and Katie took possesion, got by a couple of Jackson defenders, and lofted a long 35 yard shot that deflected off the crossbar with 13 seconds left. Too little too late as they say. "I give our girls credit for fighting back at the end but to be a championship team you have to be able to play with a more consistent mindset. I have faith in this group to rebound."

Marshall 6 Charlotte 0
Marshall continued its excellent play with a convincing 6-0 win vs Charlotte at the Marshall Soccer Complex on Saturday. The Marshall defense has not allowed a goal in 508 minutes of game time and extends its shut out streak to 6 games. Carly Weck started it off with an unassisted goal just 4 minutes in and 9 minutes later Lauren Feasel made it 2-0 after an assist from Katie Blank. Carly Weck tallied her second goal from Emily Peters with 20 minutes left in the half. At the 9 minute mark Katie Slaght scored the most acrobatic goal of the season as she came flying in from the 18, whether she took off from outside the 18 is debatable, and hit a full volley after a beautiful corner from Sydney Reichenbaugh. 3 minutes later Meg Dubois rounded out the first half scoring off an assist from Carson Tobias and the 5-0 halftime lead. "We started slow but it's nice to see that these girls understand that if we aren't playing well we can still keep our composure and work it out," said Coach Harkey. "As the first half progressed so did our play."
Charlotte came out much more aggressive in the second half and held Marshall to one score, another corner from Sydney as it was played by Katie Blank to Courtney Gallihugh who drilled it past the Charlotte keeper. Marshall had several other good chances but couldn't convert. Marshall outshot Charlotte 19-2 with Ashley Esselink making 1 save. Marshall is 9-4-1.

Marshall 2 St Joe 0
A long bus ride and 80 degree weather usually takes its toll on most teams and it affected the opening of Marshall's game at St Joe. Feeling the effects of the heat and shaking off the emotional hangover of a tough game vs Portage Northern on Monday, Marshall came out on Wednesday a little sluggish. On their senior night and last home game, St Joe started the game with a lot of energy had most of the early run of play. St Joe put pressure on the Marshall defense but couldn't get any real chances as Ashley Esselink saved their only shot on goal. Midway through the first half Marshall began to find a rythym and Carly Weck play a ball through to Katie Slaght who drilled a 25 yarder over the keeper's arms to the top corner and a 1-0 lead. 13 minutes later Katie Blank sent a ball down the left wing to Meg Dubois who after putting a beautiful move on the defender placed a beautful ball just under the cross bar for the 2-0 final score. At halftime the threatening weather put an end to all festivities as the game was called. "We started off very slow but were able to stay organized and composed and not let St Joe take advantage", said Coach Harkey. "We really picked it up later in the half and were playing much better as the first half ended. Katie and Meg both made a couple of terrific shots."
Marshall ends SMAC league play with a 4-1-1 record and 13 points which puts them in a tie with Lakeview for 3rd place in the SMAC League standings. Marshall's overall record is 8-4-1.

Under the constant threat of a thunderstorm, perennial powerhouse Portage Northern came to Marshall to take on up and coming Marshall in the SMAC East crossover game. Northern opened the game with confidence and as they like to do forced the issue to goal. Marshall held its ground throughout the first half as the defense kept the Northern offense at bay. Northern did get off 5 shots but nothing that caused any danger. "We didn't necessarily talk about sitting back in a defensive mode. It was more of a case of Northern being so aggressive that we couldn't put anything together", said Coach Harkey. "We were happy to be 0-0 at the half and we were very confident starting the second half."
That confidence began to show on the field as Marshall began to put pressure on a stingy Northern defense. Both teams had good chances throughout the second half but neither team could find the back of the net. Northern had two great chances in the latter stages of the second half when their high scoring forwards got two opportunities at goal but Ashley Esselink made the plays she needed to keep the ball out of net. Their last chance game with under 5 minutes as Ashley tipped a high shot that hit the under side of the crossbar. Marshall's best chance came late in regulation when Lauren Feasel received a cross and placed it to the far post and it rolled just wide. After two scoreless 10 minute overtime periods SMAC rules call for a shootout to decide the winner.
Portage made its first and as did Marshall. Northern's second attempt was knocked away by Ashley. Marshall and Northern both made its next 3 so it stood 4-4 with Marshall having the last shot to win it but the Northern keeper didn't have to move to save the day for Northern. In the 6th round Northern's shot sailed over the bar and Marshall had another chance to win it but Marshall's shot hit the cross bar to keep Northern's hopes alive. The 7th round proved to be the finale as Northern made their attempt and Marshall couldn't get it past the Northern keeper, 5-4 Northern wins. "What a tough way to lose this game", said Harkey. "I thought our girls stepped up in that second half and played one of the better teams toe to toe and in the end we had two chances in the shootout to slam the door but it just wasn't meant to be. We have to take this as a learning experience and build on it."
Marshall has 10 points in the SMAC seeding race as Northern moves ahead of Marshall with 12.

Marshall was a very fired up team tonight knowing they had clinched a share of the SMAC East title and played with a lot of enthusiasm. It showed early as Carly Weck crossed a ball to the front of the goal and Meg Dubois got a head on it just 4 minutes into the game for the 1-0 lead. 10 minutes later Carly had a take away and beat the Olivet keeper from 18 yards for 2-0. A minute and 15 seconds later Carly placed a corner just outside the 6 and Katie Slaght scored the second header of the game and it's 3-0. And in what has to be a school record third header Katie Blank scored off a nice cross from Sydney Reichenbaugh. "We really came out with a ton of energy tonight," said Coach Harkey. "The girls are feeling a lot of excitement and we definitely played that way in the first half."
It was more of the same in the second half as Carly scored her second unassisted goal of the evening 7 minutes in. Carly then struck again with another beautiful cross right to the goal and Courtney Gallihugh, you guessed it, scored the 4th headed goal of the night. With 20 minutes left Katie Blank scored her second goal of the game from a nice hard ball from Lauren Feasel and with 8 minutes left, keeper Ashley Esselink, playing on the field, scored on a PK. "We were very aggressive in the box and I can't say I've ever seen us our heads like we did tonight." Marshall improves to 6-3-1 on the season.

Marshall 3 Coldwater 0
In one of the biggest games in recent Marshall soccer history, Marshall beats Coldwater 3-0 to guarantee at least a share of the SMAC East title. Marshall regained its recent good play and maintained most of the possession throughout the game and broke through Coldwater's defensive tactics with about 15 minutes left in the first half. Carson Tobias received a ball at the top of the 18 and delivered a shot that glanced off a Coldwater defender and into the back of the net for the 1-0 halftime lead. "I was very pleased with how we played in the first half," said Coach Harkey. "We only scored 1 goal but we kept possession and moved the ball around the field. I would have liked to see us attack the goal more but we played well."
Marshall completely took over the second half and continued to attack the Coldwater defense. Coldwater put up a tough fight but could not keep Marshall out of the goal. Defender Katie Holland scored her first career goal off a corner from Sydney Reichenbaugh and 10 minute later Sydney scored her first career goal to seal the 3-0 win. Marshall outshot Coldwater 21-0. "We played much more aggressive in the second half and played much more creative soccer as the half progressed. This is a good day for Marshall soccer to be able to say we have at least a share of the SMAC East title. This team should be proud of this accomplishment. We have other goals and a lot of expectations so our work is just beginning." Marshall is 3-0-1 in the SMAC East.

Marshall 0 Vicksburg 2
Finally, a beautiful evening to be playing soccer in Marshall. The sun was out, the crowd was excited, and the Marshall varsity soccer team was coming off two impressive performances. Unfortunately, the girls did not bring that momentum with them tonight. It was obvious from the first whistle that Marshall was moving slow and playing uninspired soccer. Vicksburg was winning all the 50-50 balls and Marshall was not able to connect on its passes. The last 10 minutes of the half saw Marshall finally put some pressure on the Vicksburg defense and create a couple of good chances. Still, the score remained even at half and Marshall was confident they could regain their form for the second half. "We just did not have the focus in the first half that we have had all year," said Coach Harkey. "I thought we would be ready to play. We have been playing well coming into the game."
Marshall could not keep the momentum it had generated at the end of the first half and 15 minutes into the second half Vicksburg's Jenna Ruimveld received a ball at the top of the box and put a nice shot passed Ashley Esselink's out stretched arms for the game winner. Marshall finally responded and began to create some better opportunities but Vicksburg' Ruimveld struck again with 8:27 left in the game. After a hand ball, Ruimveld struck a beauty from 25 yards to the top corner for what appeared to be the game clincher. But Marshall wasn't quite done. Meg scored on a cross from Carly Weck but was called for offside. Vicksburg was then called for a hand ball in the box but Carly could not capitalize. Marshal had three other great chances in the last 5 minutes but just could not score.
"If we would have played the entire game like we played the last 15 minutes it would have been a different story. I thought with 11 seniors that we could avoid these types of games, games where we have these letdowns. The positive is that even though we did not play very well, we could still have won this game. We just have to do a better job of finishing." Marshall outshot Vicksburg 14-3 with 5 shots on goal. Marshall is now 4-3-1.

Marshall 2 Harper Creek 1
In a game which had huge ramifications in the SMAC East race, Marshall held on down the stretch to beat Harper Creek 2-1 and move into first place. Harper Creek played its offside strategy very well in the first half and caught Marshall offsides on numerous ocassions. But midway through the first half Carly Weck got behind the Harper defense and beat the Beaver keeper to go up 1-0. "It's a risky strategy and all you have to do is beat it once and you've got a situation where it's 1v1 against the keeper", said Coach Harkey. "We made adjustments at halftime against their trap and had some success in the second half."
Marshall began to exploit the Harper trapping startegy and had many chances to put the game away and with 19 minutes left in the second half freshman Sydney Reichenbaugh played a nice cross to Katie Slaght for the 2-0 lead what appeared to be a comfortable two goal cushion. But less than 2 minutes later Harper's Lisa Wilbur took a free kick from 35 yards and lofted it over Ashley Esselink's outstretched arms to cut it to 2-1. Marshall's defense began to tire and Harper took advantage. Harper pressured Marshall into their defensive third much of the last 10 minutes. But Marshall continued to counter attack and missed several opportunities in the closing minutes to finally shut the door on the Beavers.
"We had numerous chances to score and put the game out of reach but just could not finish. Their keeper did a nice job of pressuring our breakaways. I was very proud of our girls down the stretch. We were tired and Harper was putting pressure on us but we stuck together and held on." Marshall outshot Harper 15-3 with 8 shots on goal.
Marshall is now 2-0-1 in the SMAC East and is currently in first place with 7 points. Harper Creek drops to 0-2-1 in SMAC play.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 0
Marshall and Lakeview got together on Monday night and provided the fans with what has become an expected thrilling, fight to the end soccer game. Although the score did not reflect it the game was an exciting, tough, physical battle between two very good soccer teams. Both defenses played outstanding limiting each team to just 5 shots and both keepers made key saves to keep their teams in the game. Lakeview had the best chance during regulation with just over 10 minutes to play when Lakeview was finally able to penetrate the stingy Marshall defense and got off a screamer to the far post. Ashley Esselink dove and got a fingertip on it to push it wide and keep Marshall even. Marshall's best chance came with 5 minutes left when Carly Weck placed a ball to the center of the box but Marshall could find the touch and the ball rolled harmlessly away.
The first overtime was a battle in the midfield with neither team able to create a chance. The 2nd overtime was more of the same until with 2 minutes left Marshall had two great chances to win it. The ball was played back to the Lakeview keeper who misplayed it and Katie Slaght won it, took a touch to the center, and took a shot from 5 yards but to the keepers credit she scrambled back and got a hand on it to keep it 0-0. With less than 30 seconds to go Marshall put the ball into the box and after two shots were blocked by the Lakeview defense Emily Peters last shot went wide as time expired. "That was an exciting game to be involved with," said Coach Harkey. "Both teams played hard as always when these two teams meet. Although we didn't get the result, we are happy with the point towards the league standings as a result of the tie. We played well and we continue to get better." Marshall is 1-0-1 in SMAC East and 3-2-1 overall.

Gull Lake scored 10 minutes into the second half and then held off Marshall for the 1-0 win at Gull Lake on another cold windy wet evening. Gull Lake controlled most of the first half and had several excellent opportunites on goal. Gull Lake out shot Marshall 8 to 1 and forced Marshall keeper Ashley Esselink to make several good saves to keep Marshall in the game. "We were outplayed in that first half so we were very happy to be 0-0 going into halftime." said Coach Harkey. "Ashley played outstanding and kept us in the game and I felt we gathered some momentum late in the half."
Gull Lake finally broke through early in the second half on a ball played long and Michelle Vostos poked it by Ashley and the Marshall defense for the 1-0 lead. Gull Lake continued to pressure the Marshall defense but with less success getting to goal and Marshall began to create some good opportunities for itself. The best Marshall chance came with 20 minutes left as Meg won a ball in the box and put it past the Gull Lake keeper but a Gull Lake defender cleared it off the line. "I thought we played them fairly even for most of the second half. Our defense slowed down their attacking style and we held our defensive composure much better. We also were able to counter attack on several ocassions. It's a disappointing loss but we will take a lot of positives away from this game." On another cold and windy Michigan spring day Marshall came out on fire and beat Sturgis 2-0 in the first SMAC East game of the season. Eight minutes into the game defender Kate Belew played a beautiful ball down the wing to a streaking Carly Weck who beat her defender and put a perfect cross to the front of the goal where Katie Slaght volleyed it in for the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later Carly Weck put a corner again in front of the goal and Katie won the ball in the box to Carson Tobias who drilled it to the top right corner and the 2-0 lead. Marshall continued to maintain control for most of the half but Sturgis began to control the midfield and created some problems for Marshall in the last 10 minutes of the half. Sturgis managed to get off 3 shots on goal but all were easily stopped by keeper Ashley Esselink. "We began to lose our shape late in the half and began to play too many balls over the top instead of sticking to what was working for us." said Coach Harkey.
Marshall quickly regained the momentum early in the second half and had several good opportunities in front of goal. Marshall's defense continued its run of good play with its third straight shut out by limiting Sturgis to 5 shots. Ashley had 4 saves in goal. "This team is really learning how to play soccer together and to help each other on the field. We are able to connect on our passes and we have done a good job of keeping possession. Most important they are starting to realize that they must play the entire 80 minutes. We are happy with our early season play but we have a lot of work to do to reach our goals." Marshall improves to 3-1 and 1-0 in the SMAC East.

Marshall 2 Jackson Parma Western 0
Marshall won its second straight Sports Fest championship and 3rd in 4 years with a nice victory over a tough Jackson Parma Western squad 2-0. Marshall got on the board in the first 10 minutes when Carson Tobias got the ball behind the Western defense and placed a ground ball across the front of the goal where Katie Slaght finished it off for the 1-0 lead. With 5 minutes left in the half Courtney Gallihugh settled a ball in front of the keeper about 15 yards from goal and a drilled a low shot that sneaked by the goalie for the final score. "I know it's early in the season but we played a very well controlled game keeping a lot of the possession and taking away Western's strength of playing quick over the top. The defense was outstanding not allowing Western a shot on goal. This was a very solid win for us and it's nice to keep our trophy for another year." Marshall is 2-1.
Marshall 5 Parchment 0
In the first round of the Marshall Sporst Fest Marshall rebounded from its opening season loss with a convincing win against Parchment 5-0. Katie Slaght started it off just a minute and a half into the game with a header off a corner from Carly Weck. 10 minutes later Katie and Carly teamed up again for the 2-0 lead. With 7 minutes left in the first half Freshman Lauren Feasel scored her first career high school goal after the assist from Katie Blank. And with 3 minutes to go Vick Sell finished off a nice cross from Lauren to take a 4-0 lead into the half. Defender Jules Hinske finished the scoring just 3 minutes into the second half with an unassisted goal and Marshall conitinued to maintain control throughout the remainder of the game. "The girls responded well after that heartbeaker in Three Rivers. We were precise with our passes and made some terrific runs at goal. Our defense was excellent" said Coach Harkey. Marshall outshot Parchment 11 to1 and evened its record at 1-1.

Marshall 1 Three Rivers 2
Marshall opened the 2011 season with a disappointing loss at Three Rivers 2-1 on Tuesday. Both teams battled evenly throughout the first half with the best opportunity going to Marshall's Courtney Gallihugh who hit the post from 18 yards at the 10 minute mark. Marshall had two other opporunities in the half but their shots were wide. The half ended deadlocked at 0-0.
Marshall scored early in the second half. Carly Weck crossed the ball into the box as Meg Dubois tried to win the ball and it ended at Carson Tobias' feet and Carson knocked it past the Three Rivers keeper. Midway through the second half Three Rivers got the equalizer on a misplayed ball by the Marshall defense. Marshall outplayed Three Rivers over the last 20 minutes of the game and had several good scoring opportunities the best coming with just over 2 minutes to play when Carly sent a long shot on goal and the ball was tipped by the Three Rivers keeper. The ball hit the post and Lauren Feasel was there to finish it off but a Three Rivers defender just cleared it out. A minute later Hannah Macenroe of Three Rivers drilled a beautiful shot from over 30 yards out that went in the top left corner. Game over 2-1.
"That was a tough way to lose a game where I thought we outplayed our opponent. We had a majority of the possession and we created many more opportunities. I give Hannah Macenroe the credit for a great shot but a mistake earlier in the half really hurt us. But I am very pleased with our overall play. We really moved the ball well and were very successful penetrating their defense. Overall, our defense played well. We limited them to very few chances. Despite the loss it was a good start to what we all hope is a very successful season." Marshall outshot Three Rivers 12 to 3 with 4 of those on goal.

Districts - Second Round
Marshall 2 Vicksburg 3
Marshall's season comes to a close as Vicksburg takes advantage of several Marshall mistakes to win the second round district game 3-2. Vicksburg scored early, only 6 minutes into the game, on a long free kick that got over the Marshall defense and Vicksburg's Abbey Stasik beat Ashley Esselink for the 1-0 lead. Vicksburg continued to press forward by playing long balls over the Marshall defense and that kept Marshall on their heels. Marshall did have some opportunities at the end of the half but was not able to create any real chances at goal. "I was very disappointed in that first goal," said Coach Harkey. "We knew coming in that Vicksburg likes to play the long ball and we spent a lot of time at practice on Wednesday in defending that. Within 6 minutes we give up a goal on a long ball."
As has been the case the entire year Marshall came out with much more enthusiasm and intensity in the second half but another mistake by Marshall left them down 0-2. Again Vicksburg played a long ball over the top of the defense and Jenna Ruimveld lofted a 25 yard shot over Ashley's head. Marshall found a way to regroup and 7 minutes later freshman Brianna Kalisz, playing in only her second varsity game, scored off a header from a nice Carly Weck corner kick. Marshall had all the momentum and another giveaway by the Marshall defense four minutes later led to another 25 yard ball over the head of Ashley for the 3-1 lead. To Marshall's credit they continued to put offensive pressure on the Vicksburg defense and with 14 minutes left Carly got by the Bulldog defense down the right side and play a beautful slotted ball that was finished by Vicki Sell. With the lead now down to 3-2 Marshall pushed forward and had several more great chances to draw even but was turned away by a determined Vicksburg defense. "This was a very bittersweet loss," said Harkey. "Eventhough we were missing a number of girls due to injury and illness, we still felt confident we could win this game. And I think we did have a chance during the game but it's been an issue with this team all year, not being able to play with a high level of intensity for an entire game. Tonight it came back to haunt us." Marshall was without Katie Slaght, Katie Blank, Emily Peters, Carson Tobias, Laura Karr, Katie Holland, and Kate Belew could only play half due to an illness. Marshall had three JV freshmen players, Bri Kalisz, Madison Flynn, and Carmen O'Dell who played almost the entire second half in place of the injured players. "I thought those young girls played fantastic. To be thrown into a situation like that and to perform the way they did is very encouraging for next year." Marshall ends its season at 11-9-1.

Districts - First Round
Marshall 2 Jackson Northwest 1
On a beautiful night for soccer and the Marshall stands filled with the color red, Marshall won its first district playoff game in 4 years by beating Jackson Northwest 2-1. Marshall controlled most of the play of the game and out shot Northwest 25 to 7 but could only find the net twice. Northwest played the offsides trap throughout the game and Marshall continued to get behind the defense but could not finish the play. Marshall was called for 7 offsides in the game but also had 8 breakaway opportunities. Finally with 1:07 left in the first half Meg Dubios took a pass from freshman Carmen O'Dell and took a touch around the Northwest keeper for the first goal to take a 1-0 lead into half. "That first goal was big", said Coach Harkey. "It gave us the momentum we needed going into halftime." Marshall outshot Northwest 14 to 3 in the first half.
In the second half Marshall continued to get behind the Northwest defense and continued to struggle with finishing the play as the Northwest keeper made save after save. With 31:26 on the clock Carly Weck again faced the keeper one on one and drilled a low drive to the far post and the 2-0 lead. Less than 3 minutes later Marshall made a mistake by giving up the ball in their defensive end and Jackson beat Ashley to the near post to cut the lead to 2-1. With 5 minutes left Northwest had one more chance to tie the game but the shot hit the crossbar and went over. "Overall I was pleased with our play. We moved the ball around nicely and had much of the game's possession," said Harkey. "But if we want to have a good showing in the rest of districts we must stop making those costly turnovers and mistakes." Marshall now plays Vicksburg at Vicksburg on Thursday June 3rd at 7:30pm. Marshall's record imrpoves to 11-8-1.

Marshall 0 Parma Western 2
With only three subs Marshall fought hard but did not have enough weapons as Jackson Parma Western beats Marshall 2-0 in the last game of the regular season. Due to injury and sickness Marshall was down to 14 regular players and 5 JV players as Western broke a scoreless tie with 20 minutes left in the first half as Brooklyn Morgan wins a ball just outside the box and hits a screamer past Ashley Esselink for the game winner. Marshall had two good opportunties as Courtney Gallihugh received a ball in the box but Western was able to clear and Carly Weck put a free kick into the 6 yard box but no Marshall player was there. "I liked our energy at the beginning of the game," said Coach Harkey. "We all knew that we were outmanned but I thought we still played well. Western just scored a nice goal to take the lead into halftime."
Nine minutes into the second half Western's Mary Stoner sealed the deal for the Panthers after Marshall gave away the ball in their defensive third and Stoner got by the defense to beat Ashley to the far post for the 2-0 final score. "We just continue to make crucial mistakes in our defensive end of the field," said Harkey. "Lazy passes, holding the ball too long, just poor decisions have hurt us all year. We have given up 4 goals in the last two games as a result of those poor decisions. If we want to be successful in districts we must correct those mistakes." Marshall continued to attack late in the game and had a number of opportunties. Meg had a shot that went just over the crossbar and Katie Holland had a header off a corner from Carly that hit the bar. Marshall ends the regular season at 10-8-1 and will play Jackson Northwest in the first round of districts on Tuesday, June 1st at Marshall at 6:00pm.

Marshall 0 Lakeshore 5
Marshall forgot to get off the bus in the first half and fell behind 4-0 in route to a 5-0 loss at Lakeshore to finish 6th in the final league standings. Just 26 seconds into the game Marshall's defense gave the ball to the Lakeshore attackers inside 20 yards and Lakeshore took advantage for the very early 1-0 lead and things went down from there. Ten minutes later the defense again had a giveaway in their defensive third and Lakeshore scored on the breakaway to make it 2-0. With 19 minutes left Lakeshore score again on a very deserved goal to go ahead 3-0. The final first half goal with 3:22 left came on a corner kick that was allowed to enter the six yard box and was headed in by an aggressive Lakeshore attacker. "That last goal represented our first half play, uninspired, said Coach Harkey. "To allow a ball inside the six yard line on a corner kick is inexcusable. You will lose big with plays like that."
Marshall faired better in the second half with much better ball possession and a much better attacking mentality. Lakeshore scored its last goal with 11 minutes to play on a 30 yard free kick. "Although our effort level was much better in the second half, this was a very disappointing performance. We had talked about how we must continue to play hard and build some momentum going into the final stretch of the season. We will put this game behind us, regroup and move on." Marshall's SMAC record ends at 4-5 and their overall record is 10-7-1.
May 24, 2010
Defender Jules Hinske scores two goals, the second coming just 1:28 into the first overtime period, to lead Marshall in a come from behind win against St Joe. With 15:44 left in the first half St Joe got behind the Marshall defense and beat keeper Ashley Esselink to the far post for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later St Joe converts on a controversial penalty kick and heads into halftime with a 2-0 lead. "During the first half our girls were more worried about how hot it was and were not focused on the game," said Coach Harkey. "With that being said we were still playing some good soccer, playing to feet and moving the ball around the field. We just had no finishing punch."
Marshall came out a different team in the second half and held much of the play. About midway through the half defender Jules Hinske was moved to the forward position where she played as a freshman. With 13:29 left that move paid off as Meg Dubois played a ball wide to Jules, who with her good speed, got around the St Joe defender and beat the keeper to the near post. Three minutes later Carly Weck played the ball to Meg in the box and Meg finished it off to draw even. "Jules really lifted the team with her energy," said Harkey. "We had all the momentum at the end of regulation and we were very confident going into overtime."
In the overtime period, Carson Tobias won a ball at midfield and played a nice ball forward to Jules who again got around the defender. Jules kept her composure and at the edge of the box drilled the game winner to the top of the net. "Jules got those two goals because she works so hard. She just out worked the St Joe defenders" Marshall moves on to play at Lakeshore on Wednesday for 5th place in the league tournament. Marshall is now 10-6-1.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 2
In the first round of the league tournament, Marshall put up a valiant effort despite playing without Katie Slaght and Katie Blank due to injury, both out for the season, and Kate Belew due to a death in the family but could not overcome Lakeview in a 2-0 loss. Marshall instituted a conservative defensive game plan in order to conserve energy and kept Lakeview at bay for most of the game. Lakeview out shot Marshall 12 to 3 in the first half with Ashley Esselink making some key saves to keep Lakeview off the board. Marshall's Carson Tobias got off 2 shots, one saved by Lakeview's all-state keeper Grace Labrecque and the other sailing just wide. About midway through the half Carly Weck got behind the Lakeview defense and had a one v one situation against Labrecque. With the defender on her back Carly could not get the shot by Labrecque. "We switched our formation and decided to play a more defensive game," said Coach Harkey. "It worked in the sense that we kept Lakeview out of the goal in the first half and we were able to manage our fatigue."
Despite Lakeview controlling most of the play in the second half, Marshall had two great opportunities in the second half on counter attacks both by Meg Dubois. Meg was able to get by the defense on the left side and she put up two excellent shots, one that missed just wide of goal and one that hit the post. With 13 minutes left Lakeview finally broke the stubborn Marshall defense. Lakeview put in a corner and Marshall did not get the intitial clearing ball and Abbey Labrecque sent the ball to the upper right corner for the game winner. Three minutes later Labrecque scored again to seal the victory for Lakeview and a second round game against Portage Northern. "It was a very good game for us in terms of preparing us for the final stretch of the season," said Harkey. "Marshall-Lakeview games are always tough, competitive games. I thought we held our own against a strong Lakeview team and played a very competitive game despite the circumstances." Marshall was out shot 19 to 7 and Ashley made 12 saves in goal. Marshall drops to 9-6-1 and will play the #7 seed St Joe on Monday.

Marshall 0 Jackson High 0
On parents night in celebration of what the parents do to support their chidren and the soccer program, Marshall struggled to put the ball in the net and settled for a 0-0 draw against Jackson High. Both teams had opportunities with Jackson getting the first chance early in the game on a breakaway but the shot was directed right at Ashley Esselink for the easy save. Minutes later Carly Weck sent two beautiful balls across the face of the net but no Marshall player was there. Midway trhough the first half Courtney Gallihugh had a free kick from 25 yards that hit the cross bar and then hit the line before the Jackson keeper got control. And with less than 10 minutes to go in the half, Carson Tobias had two headers directed at goal and a shot on the rebound that was saved by the keeper to send the game into halftime 0-0. "How we didn't get the ball in the net there at the end of the half I don't know," said Coach Harkey. "But I liked how we were more patient on offense in the first half, playing with a lot more composure with the ball and playing more possesion soccer."
Marshall controlled much of the play in the second half and again created several good opportunities to score. The first coming early in the second half when Carson took a ball off a cross from Carly and her first touch hit the cross bar and again hit the goal line. Midway through the half Carly put a corner on the far post but the Marshall attackers misjudged the header and another oppotunity was missed. Later in the game Carly again put two perfect balls in front of the net but were not finished. "I can't say enough about how Carly is serving up balls into the front of the net," said Harkey. "We have to be more determined in front of goal. I am disappointed that we did not get the result but I liked the things we are doing out on the field. We have lost two very important players in the last week to injury but the girls are playing hard and they are playing good soccer." Marshall will play the first round league tournament game on Wednesday. Marshall is now 9-5-1.

Marshall 2 St Joe
St Joe scores with 2:17 left in the game to beat Marshall 3-2 in the East/West crossover matchup. St Joe's junior sensation Ellery Karsten scored first 13 minutes into the game but Carly Weck put one in just 29 seconds later to tie it 1-1. St Joe play very inspired the first half and put a ton of pressure on Marshall in the early going. "We were just hanging on for a while," said Coach Harkey. "Carly's unassisted goal was huge as it took some of their momentum away."
Marshall played much more enthusiastically in the second half and Meg Dubois scored on a nice lay off in the box from Carson Tobias to take the 2-1 lead. Marshall continued to threaten in the offensive third but could not put that 3rd goal away. With 11 minutes left St Joe pushed forward on a counter attack and scored when the ball was played across and was settled at the 18. St Joe's Alicia Chadek hammered one to the top right corner to draw even at 2-2. With 2:17 left in the game Chadek again won a bouncing ball in the box and put it past Ashley Esselink for the game winner. "Our defense just got tired and St Joe beat us to the ball on those last two goals," said Harkey. "I thought we played very well in the second half. We created some great chances in the box. Carly has done a nice job out wide of getting us balls in a scoring position. I told the girls this was a game that we did not lose. You have to give St Joe credit. They won the game." Marshall finishes SMAC play with 9 points and is currently in 7th place. Final seedings for the league tournament will be decided with the Central/West crosover games on Monday night. Marshall is 9-5.

Marshall 3 Kalamazoo Central 1
In the East/Central crossover game against Kalamazoo Central Marshall scored two second half goals to beat a determined Maroon Giants team 3-1. In a very physical game where 31 fouls were called Marshall withstood an early offensive onslaught and freshman Katie Blank scored her second goal in as many varsity games off a nice ball from Meg Dubois with ten minutes played. Seven minutes later Kalamazoo took advantage of their offensive push and scored the equalizer. K-Central continued to put great pressure on the Marshall defense but was unable to put another goal in. "K-Central took advantage of our defense's lack of intensity during the first half," said Coach Harkey. "We were back on our heels. We were not stepping up to challenge their forwards but Ashley made a couple of good saves to limit Central to only one goal." Central out shot Marshall 10 to 6 in the first half.
The second half was a different story. Marshall generated much more offense and with 6 minutes gone Meg played a nice through ball to Ashley Metzgar down the right side. Ashley delivered a perfect cross to the far post and Katie Slaght knocked it in with a nicely timed header for what would be the game winner. Marshall continued to press forward and finally put the game away when with 7 minutes to play Courtney Gallihugh headed in a free kick from Carly Weck for the final score of 3-1. "I was very pleased with the way we finished the game. The defense played much better in the second half and we showed great courage in a very physical battle," said Harkey. Marshall out shot Central in the second half 11-6 and Ashley Esselink finished the game with 6 saves. Marshall has 9 points in conference play and will take on St Joe on Wednesday at Marshall in the East/West crossover. Marshall is 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

Marshall 7 Olivet 0
Marshall's Katie Slaght was on her game last night as she scored 3 goals in a 7-0 shut out of Olivet at Olivet's new turf field. Marshall broke out of its recent offensive slump with 3 goals in the first half and continuing with 4 in the second. Meg Dubois started it off 8 minutes into the game after settling the ball 25 yards from goal and hitting a high lofted shot over the keeper's head for the early 1-0 lead. Olivet played tough until with 7 minutes left in the first half Katie scored her first goal off an assist from Carson Tobias. With 32 seconds left Carly Weck received a pass from Emily Peters on the right side of the box and with her left foot put it in the top corner to make it 3-0 at the half. "I wasn't completely happy with the first half as we had several breakdowns on defense and we still have a tendency to play the ball forward too quickly on offense," said Coach Harkey.
Olivet again came out and played tough defensively for the first 20 minutes of the second half but Marshall scored four times in the last 20 minutes to finsh off the game. Katie Slaght scored with 20 minutes left and Katie Blank, a freshman who was just moved up from the JV, scored off a nice cross from Carly to make it 5-0. Katie Slaght showed the strength of her foot by knocking one in from about 25 yards into the top right corner over the out stretched Olivet keeper. Ashley Metzgar scored from a nice through ball from Vicki Sell to round out the final score. "I was extremely pleased with the second half," said Harkey. "It was so nice to see us playing as a team and moving the ball around with good touches and precise passes. That's how we started the season and I am hoping we can end it that way as well."

Marshall 1 Coldwater 0
On a night where storms were swirling in the sky, Marshall held off a much improved Coldwater team 1-0 to improve its SMAC East record at 2-2. With 4 minutes left in the first half Meg Dubois scored the game winner on a determined effort to win and control the ball in the box and then was able to push it past the keeper. Marshall played with much more fire to start the game and had good chances in the early going but could not find the range. Coldwater then had two great chances both on breakaways but Ashley Esselink made two outstanding saves to keep Coldwater off the scoreboard. Both teams then fought to gain the advantage and it wasn't until Meg's heroics that Marshall finally pulled ahead. "We started out very well but when we did not score on those early chances I think Coldwater gained their confidence" said Coach Harkey. "We deserted our team play on offense and began to play kick ball. It was not effective."
Marshall began to figure out Coldwater's defense and took control of the game as the second half progressed. Marshall continued to press Coldwater's defense but the Cradinals were able to hold them off. Coldwater was able to generate a couple of chance late off counter attacks but Ashley again kept them out of the goal. "I thought we played a much better tactical game in the second half. Our girls did a nice job of adjusting to Coldwater's defensive style of play and we were very creative in our attacking third. And the defense did a nice job of shutting down their counter attacks in the second half." Marshall must wait for the results of the remaining SMAC East games for the pairings for the crossover games. Lakeview plays Sturgis and then Harper Creek. Marshall is 7-4 overall.

Marshall 3 Vicksburg 1
Marshall game out of the gate flat and uninspired but rebounded in the second half to come from behind and beat Vicksburg 3-1 at Vicksburg. The Bulldogs took advantage of Marshall lackluster start and had 5 corners in the first 8 minutes and on their 6th corner they capitalized to take an early 1-0 lead. Vicksburg continued to outplay Marshall but could not put another goal in. "We were very lucky to only be down 1-0 at the half" said Harkey. "To say the least I was not very happy at halftime and I really let our girls have it. It was a culmination of our poor play for 3 or 4 games. To their credit, they responded well."
Playing with much more purpose in the second half, Marshall scored three times to take the win away from Vicksburg. 10 minutes into the second half Carson Tobias won a ball just outside the box and cut the ball back to the middle and unleashed a beautiful ball to the uppr right corner. Three minutes later Carson dug the ball away from the keeper and Carly Weck finished off the play and suddenly Marshall had a 2-1 lead. Marshall continued to pressure Vicksburg the rest of the half and Katie Slaght put it out of reach after a nice ball played forward off a free kick by Kate Belew. On a free kick from her defensive end Kate played a higha rching ball over the Bulldog defense and Katie ran onto it and beat the keeper 1 v 1. Marshall was without Courtney Gallihugh and Emily Peters as Harper Creek scored with 5:21 left in the game to beat Marshall and move into second place in the SMAC East. Olivia Roberts missed the first half and Marshall played without its top three midfielders for much of the game. Harper Creek played very inspired soccer throughout and won the majority of 50/50 balls and controlled much of the play. Harper Creek had the opportunities n the first half but Marshall keeper Ashley Esselink held the Beavers at bay. Both teams had several good chances in the second half and with 5:21 left Harper got a foot on a bouncing ball in the box and looped it in over Ashley's head for the game winner. "We definitely missed Courtney and Emily but we have to give Harper credit." said Coach Harkey. "They played hard and keep us off our game. Our focus to to get healthy and to try to get our legs back. We are an inexperienced team so every game is a learning experience. We have to take what happened tonight and make the best of it. We are all still very positive and this will only make us a better team down the road." Marshall drops to 1-2 in the SMAC East and 5-4 overall.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 2
Marshall loses 2nd straight as they fall to SMAC East rival Lakeview 2-0. Lakeview came out very focused and aggressive and Grace Lebrecque and Lindsay Johnson scored Lakeview's two goals in the first fifteen minutes of the game. Marshall was very tentative out of the gate and Lakeview capitalized on Marshall's mistakes to take the early lead. Lakeview controlled the first half and had several other chances at goal but could not finish. "Our youth has really showed the last two games against good teams." said Coach Harkey. "We continue to make youthful mistakes that good teams will exploit and that's just what Lakeview did in the first half."
Marshall played the second half with much more intensity and although did not score had several good opportunties throughout the half. The best chance coming when Katie Slaght let a shot fly from outside the left side of the box that hit the post. "We played a much better game in the second half. We had some good runs at goal but Lakeview has a very stingy defense and we could not get the good finish. As a coach I am very happy with our progress on the field. We do have some injuries so I am interested to see how we handle the adversity. It should be a good learning process for this team." On a night where Marshall was down to 13 players Gull Lake took full advanatage and shut down Marshall 7-0 to end Marshall's 4 game winning streak. Marshall decided to play a conservative defensive game early and had three good chances on counterattacks but were ineffective around the goal. With 15 minutes gone Gull Lake broke the tie after a mistake by the Marshall defense and a 1-0 lead. 5 minutes later Gull Lake's all-state Devin Bond who will be attending Northen Illinois next year found the back of the net and the 2-0 advantage. With five minutes left in the half Gull Lake took a 3-0 lead and went into the ha;f with all the momentum. "Our lack of experience really showed tonight.' Said Coach Harkey. "We had a game plan and executed it early but too many mistakes and breakdowns really cost us. You can't afford those against the better teams."
Bond scored in the first 3 minutes of the second half and Gull Lake completely controlled the game from then on. Marshall did have a few more chances on counters but was not able to finish. Gull Lake scored three more times in the last ten minutes to hand Marshall its second loss of the year. "We were a tired soccer team tonight. It was our 5th game in six days and we only had two subs. Marshall took advantage of its opportunities scoring 6 goals on 15 shots and received a strong performance from keeper Ashley Esselink who had 12 saves. Although Sturgis had the majority of possesion throughout the game Marshall's defense played the bend but don't break game and limited Sturgis opportunities. On the other end, Marshall's offense was clicking on all cylanders and only three minutes into the game Carson Tobais fed Courtney Gallihugh just at the top of the box and Courtney found the net with nice left footed shot to the far post. Four minutes later Sturgis equalized with a long shot that caught the wind and sailed in over Ashley's head. Ten minutes later Carly Weck on a PK for the 2-1 lead and Mag and Carly each scored in the last eleven minutes to take the 4-1 lead into halftime.
Sturgis came out in the second half and continued to hold the play early and found the net with only two minutes gone. Buyt Carly was not to be outdoen. Carly received a nice pass from Katie Slaght and streaked down the right wing and zipped one past the Sturgis keeper to quell any thoughts of a Sturgis comeback. "That goal really took the energy out of Sturgis. They had controlled a lot of the possesion up to that point and after cutting the lead to 4-2 they felt they has a chance. I think Carly's goal ended those thoughts." Carson Tobias scored unassisted on a takeaway to end the scoring with nine minutes left. Sturgis out shot Marshall 24 to 15 and had 6 corners to Marshall's 2. Marshall is 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the SMAC East.

Marshall 2 Lumen Christi 0
On a beautiful spring evening at the Marshall High School Soccer Complex, Marshall put together their first complete game of the season, and as a result, beat a solid Lumen Christi team for the first time in recent memory. The first half was played to a draw both on the scoreboard and on the field. Both teams possessed the ball well and both teams had some good chances but neither could find the goal. "The first half was a very good tactical game." said Coach Harkey. "Both teams maintained possession and were looking for the right opportunities. We got a little impatient late in the half and began to play too many long balls which took away from our opportunities." The second half was much of the same until with 21 minutes left Meg Dubois fed the ball down the right to Katie Slght. Katie gathered the ball and got behind the defender and from 20 yards out scored a brilliant goal past the keeper to the top of the net. That goal energized the Redhawks and they kept the pressure on Lumen's defense and seven minutes later Katie got free again and unleashed another powerful shot that the Lumen keeper could not handle and Carly was there to finish it off. Marshall then played more conservative and held off Lumen's final push for the win. "That was a very impressive game for us." continued Coach Harkey. "Our defense was absolutely outstanding. Lumen only had two or three really good chances and Ashley Esselink stepped up with a couple of very good saves. and forwards are really starting to pay well together being very creative up front." Marshall outshot Lumen 16 to 10 and Ashley had 6 saves and was credited with her second career shut out. Marshall is now 4-1 on the season.

Championship Game Marshall 1 Gibraltar Carlson 0
Marshall took advantage of the gusty wind conditions and Katie Slaght scored off an assist from Carly Weck mid way through the first half and then held off a late charge by Carlson to hang on for the 1-0 win in the championship of the Marshall Sports Fest tournament. With the wind at their back Marshall controlled the first half and out shot Carlson 9 to 1. Much of the second half was still a Marshall game but with 10 minutes left Carlson began to use the wind to their advantage by playing the ball long. Carlson had two good chances to draw even once hitting the post and another just wide. "I think we just ran out of gas at the end." said Coach Harkey. "Playing a tough game against Western and then having to chase a lot of Carlson's long balls, we were hanging on at the end. You have to give Carlson all the credit. They really came after us at the end." Marshall out shot Carlson 15 to 7 with an 8-3 advantage with shots on goal. Ashley Esselink had 3 saves and with the win Marshall goes to 3-1.
Marshall 2 Jackson Parma Western 1

Western came out in the second half and created several opportunities early and capitalized 8 minutes in to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams battled evenly throughout the remainder of the game and with 6 minutes left Marshall broke through the stalemate. Carson Tobias put a shot on goal that was deflected by the Western keeper but Carly was there for the rebound and the 2-1 win. "This was a fun game." said Coach Harkey. "It was evenly matched and both teams played very hard. We got the one break to win the game." Western out shot Marshall 10-7. Ashley Esselink had 4 saves in goal. Marshall improves to 2-1 and will play Gibraltar Carslon in the championdhip game.

Marshall 3 Eaton Rapids 4
In a game defined by physical play and three yellow cards, Marshall fell behind early 0-3 but rallied late only to come up short 3-4 against Eaton Rapids. Eaton Rapids set the tone early with a very aggressive, physical game plan that caught the young, inexperienced Marshall team off guard. Eaton Rapids' Sienna McCone scored four minues into the game on a breakaway to take an early 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Eaton Rapids scored again for a 2-0 lead. Although Marshall did create a few opportunities, the first half was controlled by the Greyhounds. With 24 minutes left in the half McCone struck again inside the box and Eaton Rapids had a comfortable 3-0 lead at the half. "I was a liitle disappointed that our girls did not respond to their physical style of play in the first half" said Coach Harkey. "We held some possesion and did have a few opportunities in the first half but Eaton Rapids won all the 50/50 balls and knocked us off the ball whenever we had chances. We challenged our girls to step it up in the second half and they responded admirably."
Marshall came out a different team in the second half playing with much more passion and intensity. Katie Slaght scored 3 minutes in off an assist from Meg Dubois to cut the lead to 3-1. Marshall had two other great chances but the Eaton Rapids keeper, Leah Fast, made some nice saves to preserve the lead. Marshall kept the pressure on but 7 minutes later Eaton Rapids scored again on a breakaway to take a commanding 4-1 lead. The Greyhounds seemed to have the game in hand when Marshall again found some new energy. With 22 minutes left in the game Jonni McCray was on the back side of a nice ball from Carly to cut the deficit to 4-2. Two minues later Meg followed up a ball from Carly to make it 4-3 and suddenly Marshall had it in their sights. The final 19 minutes was wide open creative soccer where both teams had chances to score. Marshall's best chance came when Carly took a free kick and Fast tipped it over the crossbar to save the win for Eaton Rapids. "I have to admit this is the happiest I have been after a loss." said Harkey. "If we can find a way to bottle that enerygy and enthusiasm we had in the second half we are going to be a tough out for anybody. We really played well down the stretch." Marshall's record is now 1-1 entering Sports Fest weekend.

Marshall 8 Battle Creek Central 0
On a beautiful early season spring evening, Marshall celebrated the completion of the high school soccer field renovation project with an impressive 8-0 shut out of Battle Creek Central. Marshall High School athletic director Tom Duffy recognized the renovation project's committee members, Roger Graves, Tom Frank, Patty Belew, Kelly Williams, Nikki Blowers, Andy Karr, Adrian Harkey, David and Regina Orban, Jeff and Brigette Reichanbaugh, Lisa Dubois, and Sean Tinkey, for their outstanding dedication and their committment in seeing this project through to the end. Mr. Duffey also thanked the school board and Dr. Randy Davis for all their support, the families of the soccer athletes, and all the community members, organizations, and businesses who contributed both their time and dollars to the project.
The team did not disappoint the crowd. Carly Weck started off he scoring with an unassisted goal off a corener kick three minutes into the game and followed this up with an assist to Emily Peters twelve minutes later to make it 2-0. Carly tallied her second assist after another three minutes with a cross that Carson Tobias headed past the keeper. Katie Slaght was next on the score sheet. After taking possession just outside the box Katie ripped a shot into the top right vorner. Carly Weck then scored her second goal off an assist from Courtney Gallihugh and with one minute left in the half Courtney assisted Katie on her second goal to end the half with the score 6-0.
Courtney scored the 7th goal fifteen minutes into the second half as Carly racked up her 4th assist of the game. With thirteen minutes left Meg Dubois ended the game with a nice move to get around her defender and blasted a left footed shot to the near post. "I thought we played very well for the first game." said Coach Harkey. "These girls have worked very hard in the pre-season and it showed tonight. We did some nice things out there, being very creative up top on the attacking end. We are young and somewhat inexperienced at the varsity level with only 6 returning players from last year's varsity but we have a lot of good soccer players. We were very aggressive to goal and this group of girls has a very good knowledge about the game. I am looking forward to some very good things from this team. Most of these girls have been playing soccer together for a long time and this is a very close knit team. It's going to be fun." Marshall resumes its season on Tuesday April 13 at home against Eaton Rapids.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 1
Marshall's season came to an end Tuesday night at the Marshall Soccer Complex with a first round district loss to Lakeview 1-0 in double overtime. The capacity crowd saw an exciting game that ended with Lakeview's freshman Lindsay Johnson scoring a low line drive shot with 5:54 left in the second overtime period. Lakeview came out very strong and took the action right at Marshall. Marshall was able to weather the storm and Emily Nielsen and Carly Weck each had opportunities but were turned away by the Lakeview keeper. Lakeview also had several chances but Kelsie Wood and the Marshall defense was able to hold them off to go into halftime 0-0. "Our girls were very excited to start the game and it took us a few minutes to get settled," said Coach Harkey. "We had some great chances on those two breakaways but their keeper was aggressive and forced us to hurry our shots. It was a typical tough, physical Marshall vs. Lakeview game." Early in the second half Grace Labrecque hit the post and Lakeview had several other opportunites but could not find the net. With 3 minutes left in regulation, Danielle Hicks hit the crossbar with a header after an excellent corner from Emily Nielsen. Lakeview also had a chance to end it early in the first overtime as Abby Labrecque's header on goal was cleared by Katie Slaght. In the second overtime Abby Labrecque won a ball at the center line and sent a long ball to Johnson who gathered it in, took couple of touches to her right, and drilled a low line drive from 20 yards to win it in dramatic fashion. "This was a classic. Both teams had chances and both teams played well. It was a fun game to watch. I am very proud of this team and what we have accomplished this season." Lakeview (14-4) moves on to play Gull Lake in the second round as Marshall ends its season at 12-8.

Marshall 4 Jackson Western 0
On a beautiful spring night Marshall celebrated parent's night with a convincing win against Jackson Western 4-0. For the second consecutive game, Marshall was clicking on all cylinders as they beat a good Western team to finish the regular season with two straight wins. After introducing all the parents before the start of the game, Marshall carried the high energy and excitement into the game as they pressured Western from the start. Twelve minutes into the game Emily Nielsen broke free and beat the keeper with a ball that ended in front of the goal. Mindi Winnie finished it off for an early 1-0 lead. Nine minutes later Danielle Hicks scored off the assist from Roni Ranville and Marshall took the 2-0 lead into halftime. ""We have a great bunch of parents and the girls really wanted to perform well for them", said Coach Harkey. "We used all that energy to our advantage in the first half." The second half was much of the same as Marshall continued to press the Western defense with 13 shots. With eleven minutes left Emily Nielsen tallied her second assist as Meg Dubois scored to make it 3-0 and one minute later Meg returned the favor and Emily rounded out the scoring for the final of 4-0. "We have played very well these last two games", said Harkey. "We worked in practice on getting back to making this a simple game and working more as a team. Marshall 1 Sturgis 2
Marshall suffers its second consecutive very disappointing loss, 2-1 to SMAC East rival Sturgis, in the second round of the SMAC League tournament Monday night. For the second straight game, Marshall controlled most of the play but could not finish the job. Marshall again came out very aggressive and took the play right at Sturgis creating several opportunities early. Sturgis withstood the onslaught and with 11 minutes gone and on their first trip into the Marshall defensive zone Elizabeth Sutton dribbled around three Marshall defenders and placed a nice left-footed shot into the top right corner. Marshall took back control and again kept the ball in the Sturgis end for most of the first half allowing Sturgis only one other shot but still trailed at halftime 1-0. "That first goal was just poor defending on our part", said Coach Harkey. "To allow a player that many touches in the box just doesn't work. She hit a good shot but she never should have been in that situation. To be positive, we did respond well and went right back on the attack." The second half was even more Marshall. Time after time Marshall was able to create some great chances but time and time again they could not capitalize. Finally, at the 23:01 mark, Emily Nielesen fought her way through the Sturgis defense and hit a low screamer that the Sturgis keeper could not get to and Marshall had drawn even. "I thought at that point we would be able to finish this game off," said Harkey. "We had all the momentum and we continued to attack. We had 3 or 4 more chances right in front of goal but were just very unlucky." With 5:26 left in the game Sutton again won a ball in the box and eluded two Marshall defenders and again beat the keeper to the far corner. Marshall out shot Sturgis 10-2 in the second half and 16-4 for the game. "We have not had a favorable result these last few games but we are doing a lot of nice things out there, playing some very creative soccer, moving the ball around the field, and playing well together. I am very happy with our effort and our play. We are a very good team and hopefully we will start to get some breaks to go our way." Marshall's record now stands at 10-7.

Marshall 0 St Joe 2
In a game that will be remembered by the Marshall fans for the more than ten offsides calls, Marshall falls to St Joe 2-0 in the first round of the SMAC tournament for their second straight loss. Marshall came out with a lot of energy and pressured St Joe early but for the second game in a row has trouble putting the ball in the net. Marshall controlled much of the play the entire game but couldn't overcome St Joe's sophomore Ellery Karsten who scored both St Joe goals. Although St Joe continued to catch Marshall offsides, Marshall had a number of good opportunties early. Marshall was also able to thwart the St Joe counter attacks as both teams came up empty in the first half. "I thought we were in a very good position at halftime," said Coach Harkey. "We played with a great deal of intensity and we had some good chances. I really thought we would win the second half." In the second half St Joe responded early with Karsten's 25 yard strike from outside the box that beat Kelsie Wood to the near post. Marshall held it together and responded with great pressure on the St Joe defense. St Joe again played the offsides on several ocassions but Marshall began to time its runs and had several great opportunities. Danielle Hicks hit the post. Emily Nielsen hit the side netting. Mindi Winnie missed a break away wide. Marshall continued the pressure with 4 corners in the latter part of the second half and all were denied by the St Joe defense. Marshall had a total of 10 corners, five in each half. "We worked on our set plays this week so when we lined up for those corners I had great confidence we would finish them." Karsten put the game out of reach with 3 minutes left with her second goal to secure the St Joe win. "I told the girls after the game that this is just one of those games where we couldn't get the breaks we needed. Although we did not get the result, we played well and we are looking forward to the next game." Marshall drops to 10-6 and will play the loser of Portage Central and Sturgis on Monday, May 18.

Marshall 1 Lumen Christi 2
Marshall played well but Lumen Christi took advantage of two great opportunities and scored a 2-1 victory Monday evening at Jackson Community College. Lumen Christi won the toss and took the wind in the first half and was able to control much of the play. Lumen created several chances but Marshall's defense was up to the challenge. Marshall responded with several counter attacks and had a number of chances to put up the first goal. The best run came midway through the first half when Marshall had three consecutive corner kicks. Emily Nielsen played some great balls into the box but Marshall couldn't find someone to finish them off. With 1:05 left in the half Lumen got its first real chance when Lumen got behind the Marshall defense down the right flank and Maureen Lefere finished a brilliant header into the back of the net. "Lumen is a very disciplined, organized squad", said Coach Harkey. "They have very good skills and they play the field well. But I thought we held it together that first half. That first goal was a fantastic goal. You just have to give them credit." Marshall had the wind and asserted itself more offensively in the second half. Marshall began to get through the Lumen defense but was unable to put enough together. With 20 minutes gone in the second half Lumen's Samantha Foust again beat the Marshall defense on the right and played a low hard ball across the goal mouth and Lumen was there for the 2-0 lead. "Our defense on the back side was slow to react and it cost us. It was another well earned goal by Lumen." With 8:28 left Lumen was called for a foul just outside the box and Emily sent one over the Lumen wall to the far corner to cut the lead to 2-1. Marshall again had 3 corners in the last 4 minutes but could not get the equalizer as Lumen holds on for the win. "The difference tonight was Lumen's will to get to the ball and score. They were very aggressive on their two goals." Both teams had five shots as well as 5 corners. Marshall's record is now 10-5.

Marshall wins easily 9-0 Friday night at Onsted. Emily Nielsen led the way with 2 goals and an assist. Jules Hinske(2), Mindi Winnie, Emily Townsend, Suzy Grant, Ashley Metzgar, and Courtney Gallihugh all scored for Marshall. In another thrilling come from behind victory Marshall beats Stevensville-Lakeshore in a shootout to move into fourth place in the tournament of 16 seedings. Despite the traditional mental letdown, after a tough loss to Portage Northern and a two hour bus ride, Marshall mounted an incredible late game charge to force overtime and then won the game 3-2 in a shootout after two scoreless overtime periods. Marshall came out very flat and uninspired as they watched Lakeshore take an early 2-0 lead. Lakeshore scored just seven minutes into the game and again at the 24 minute mark as Marshall's defense was non-existent in the box. Lakeshore completely dominated the play throughout the first half and Marshall was lucky to be only down 2-0. "That was just a very poor effort on our part", said Coach Harkey. "We had a chance to move into the top 4 of the league and we were just throwing it away. I thought we had become a more mature team than that and I challenged them to prove me wrong." Marshall came out in the second half with a much more determined effort. Eight minutes in Danielle Hicks took a pass from Emily Nielsen and chipped it in over the keeper's head for Marshall's first goal and it appeared that Marshall had found its game. Marshall continued to maintain much of the possession but struggled to find the goal. Shot after shot went wide and with the clock running down, it looked desperate as Lakeshore had a break away to goal. Kelsie Wood closed down the angle and made a great save and Jules Hinske cleared it off the line to preserve the 2-1 deficit. With just 20 seconds left in the game, and after a ball played forward by Andrea Pickelman, Emily Nielsen gathered herself in the box and beat the keeper for the equalizer. "I'm not sure how these girls did it but they got themselves back into the game after halftime, as they've done time and again this year, and found a way to force it to overtime." In the two overtime periods, Marshall created several chances to end the game but couldn't find the back of the net. The best coming from Roni Ranville's free kick from 30 yards out that hit the cross bar. So Marshall lined up for its second shootout of the season. Carly Weck and Danielle made their two attempts and both teams missed two. Lakeshore missed its final chance and Emily lined up for the game winner. "I made a mistake earlier in the season by not including Emily in our shootout lineup. I was not going to make that same mistake again", said Harkey. Emily calmly put it past the diving keeper to win in dramatic fashion. "They did in fact prove me wrong. This is a very experienced team and they now believe that they can win any game. Their confidence and belief in each other has carried us a long way. I thanked them for proving me wrong." Marshall is currently in fourth place in the league seedings and needs Portage Central and Portage Northern to win to finish as the fourth seed. Marshall is now 9-4.

Marshall 0 Portage Northern 2
In a game for the ages for the Marshall High School soccer program, Marshall came up just short against one of the top teams in the state on Monday night in the SMAC East/Central crossover game. In a rugged game mared by 3 Portage yellow cards and the expulsion of Marshall fans, Portage literally fought its way to a 2-0 victory and gained an all important two points towards the league tournament seedings. It was obvious from the start that Marshall was ready to play as their defense continually turned back the high powered Northern attack. With 20:45 left in the first half Northern finally broke the deadlock after a questionable call that gave Portage a free kick just outside the box. Sophomore Samantha Kay drilled a low drive around the Marshall defensive wall that beat Kelsie Wood to the far post and a 1-0 lead. Although Portage controlled much of the play early, Marshall had several chances late in the first half. The best chance came a few minutes later when Emily Nielsen broke free from the Husky defense and sent a shot off the top of the cross bar. The second came with 12 minutes left as Ashley Metzgar got behind the defense but was taken down by a Husky defender resulting in thefirst of two yellow cards for Portage. Marshall had two other great chances off two Emily corner kicks but could not penetrate through the Portage defense and the half ended 1-0. "We came out with a great deal of intensity and confidence and I thought we stepped up to the challenge of playing one of the top programs in the state", said Coach Harkey. "Our defense was outstanding and we did have a couple of great opportunities to draw level. We were able to match their speed and were able to shut down their explosive attack. It was disappointing to give up that free kick." The second half became very heated as Marshall matched the Husky's physical play. Neither team could penetrate the opposing defense and the game came down to a battle of wills. Portage was able to keep Marshall at bay for most of the second half until with about 20 minutes left when the referee stopped the match for 10 minutes to remove a handful of Marshall students from the premises. This seemed to spark what was already a tense physical game and Marshall picked up the pressure against the Northern defense. With 12:53 left a second Portage player was given a yellow card and Marshall tried to capitalize on its momentum. Mindi Winnie sent a shot just wide and Katie Slaght sent a rocket just over the bar for what would be Marshall's best chances. Emily Nielsen had one final chance but her shot fell harmlessly into the Portage keeper's hands. Northern's second goal came on a controversial call in the box on Emily after time had expired. Samantha Kay hit the PK low and hard for her second goal and the game ended 2-0 Portage. "I am very proud of this group of girls. They played with tremendous desire and fought tooth and nail against a great team. I asked them for two things today. To play with everything they had and to stick together. They did both with great passion and I thank them for that." Portage out shot Marshall 13 to 8 and had 7 corners to Marshall's 3. Kelsie Wood had 4 saves in goal. Marshall drops to 8-4.

From the very outset Marshall was the aggressor and Mindi Winnie struck first 10 minutes into the game from an assist from Andrea Pickelman. Ten minutes later Danielle Hicks hit a beautiful one timer off a corner kick from Emily Nielsen. and drilled it into the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead that held until the half. "We completely controlled the game from the very beginning and had numerous chances," said Coach Harkey. "I would like to have seen a few more finishes but I will not complain about the way we played." Freshman Katie Slaght started the second half scoring 9 minutes in as Danielle laid the ball off and Katie carried it forward. When no defender stepped out Katie unleashed a rocket from 25 yards that the keeper had no chance of stopping. With 27 minutes left in the game Carly Weck completed the scoring off an assist from Emily. "We have played exceptional soccer these last three games", said Harkey. "The girls are really looking for each other and we have a very good chemistry right now. Monday will be a huge test for us as Northern comes to Marshall. Marshall 6 Coldwater 0
Marshall clinches second place in the SMAC East with a convincing 6-0 win at Coldwater on Wednesday night. Marshall started slow but again showed a renewed offensive attack to beat a much improved Coldwater team. Mindi Winnie drilled her first goal past the keeper for the first of her two goals 22 minutes into the game after a beautiful through ball from Carly Weck. Seven minutes later, after a pass from Emily Nielsen, Danielle Hicks had a nice left footed chip that just eluded the keeper's reach for a 2-0 lead. With 5:54 left in the first half Mindi Winnie got her second goal to go into halftime with a 3-0 lead. "As you can see from our stats, our front players are really playing well together", said Coach Harkey. "We have spent a lot of time in practice at being creative and they are putting together some nice combinations and putting a lot of pressure on opposing defenses." It became the Carly Weck show in the second half as Carly scored all three goals for Marshall. Just 5 minutes into the half Mindi played a low hard ball across the goal and Carly put it nicely past the keeper to make it 4-0. Two minutes later Carly was at it again after Emily's second assist and with 28 minutes to go Carly was tripped in the penalty box. Carly then converted the penalty shot to finish the scoring. "The first 15 minutes of the second half was very impressive", said Harkey. "We talked at halftime about keeping it a simple game. We moved the ball forward and attacked very quickly and continued to create different opportunities." Marshall out shot Coldwater 30 to 2 and had 8 corners while being called for 17 fouls. Harper Creek continued to press forward until Emily Nielsen scored her first goal off an assist from Carly Weck with 27:05 left in the first half. Marshall began to take control but could not find the back of the net for the rest of the half. "We came out a little flat but I think it was more that Harper came out very eager to play", said Coach Harkey. "But to our credit we just continued to play our game after that first goal." Marshall regrouped at halftime and Roni Ranville scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from Emily Nielsen 57 seconds into the second half. Marshall began to control most of the play and Emily scored her second goal after beating three Harper Creek defenders for a 3-1 lead. "We are really learning how to play some effective soccer", said Harkey. "The girls are looking for each other and are making very creative decisons. Our defense has settled in nicely in our new 3 back formation. They are a fun team to watch." Carly Weck finished off the scoring with 18:52 left on a rebound off Emily's shot that was stopped by the Harper keeper. Marshall out shot Harper 14 to 4 and had 5 corners. Marshall is now in sole possession of second place in the SMAC East with a 2-1 record and is 6-3 overall.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 2
Lakeview's Lindsay Johnson scored late in the first half in what turned out to be the game winner to beat Marshall in their annual rivalry game 2-0 at the Marshall Soccer Complex Wednesday night. Lakeview set the tone early by coming out physical and aggressive and maintained most of the play throughout the first half. Marshall's defense held their own against the Lakeview attack by limiting Lakeview's shots on goal to 3. Marshall showed the signs of a team that had played five games in six days as Lakeview was a step faster. "Lakeview was very physical and beat us to every 50-50 ball in the first half", said Coach Harkey. "But we did a nice job of limiting their opportunities even though they had most of the possesion." Marshall's best chance came midway through the first half when Roni Ranville played a free kick into the box and Meg Dubois headed it towards goal but Marshall was unable to get it by the Lakeview keeper. Marshall came out much stronger in the second half and managed to create several chances in the box but Lakeview's defense did well to keep it out of goal. Johnson scored Lakeview's second goal with 13:35 left in the game to secure the victory. "It was a disappointing loss because we have been playing some good soccer as late. You have to give Lakeview credit. They really took it to us early and that set the tempo. But there were still a lot of positive things out there for us to build on. We still have a lot of good in front of us." Lakeview out shot Marshall 7 to 5 and Kelsie Wood had saves in goal. Marshall drops to 5-3 and 1-1 in the SMAC.

Marshall 2 Sturgis 1
In an exciting match that came down to the last 8 minutes Marshall scored two goals within a two minute span to beat Sturgis 2-1 on Monday evening at Sturgis. With 7:45 left in the game Emily Nielsen sent a beautful corner kick across the goal and Courtney Gallihugh headed into the back of the net to tie the game. Two minutes later Carly Weck took a shot on goal that was blocked by the keeper but she was unable to hold the ball and Meg Dubois slammmed it in for the game winner. "What another great effort by the girls." said Coach Harkey. "For the second game in a row we have fought back from a deficit and used our conditioning to wear down our opponents. This game we were able to finish the job." The first half ended at 0-0 as both teams missed on opportunities. Sturgis did well in controlling possession but Marshall's defense did not allow Sturgis any good shots on goal. Marshall out shot Sturgis by 11 to 4 as Marshall did a nice job on the counter attack. "Sturgis had a lot of the possesion in the first half but Andrea, Roni, and Jules did a very good job of shutting down any attack to the goal." said Coach Harkey. "Sturgis' keeper deserves credit as she made several good saves created by our counter attacks". Sturgis gained the advantage only a minute into the second half as they scored on a rebounded shot to take the 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half Marshall began to force much of the play in Sturgis' end. "Our conditioning began to wear them down and we created many opportunities late in the game." said Harkey. Marshall finally broke through in the 62nd minute and again with Meg's game winner to take the win away from Sturgis. "We finally got a win we deserve. For the last two years we have had many games where we thought we out played our opponent but could not finish the game. Today we did just that and the girls feel good about it. This was a good win for us." Marshall out shot Sturgis 22 to 6. Courtney Gallihugh saw some action in goal and had 2 saves and Kelsie Wood also had 2 saves. Marshall improves to 5-2 and 1-0 in the SMAC.

Marshall 4 St Joe 4 (St Joe wins shoot out 5-4)
On a beautiful, sunny, spring afternoon Marshall and St Joe provided their fans and the Sports Fest championship with a thrilling shoot out finale. St Joe scored two goals in the first five minutes and again with 8 minutes left in the half to take a three goal lead and it looked as though they would coast to victory. "We talked about what we thought St Joe would do after watching them against Jackson Western", said Coach Harkey. "They have a lot of speed and like to play the ball forward. They got behind our defense a couple of times early and capitilized. We regrouped after that and played a decent first half the rest of the way. Their third goal was another mistake that has bitten us a few times this year." Carly Weck finally broke through with 4:46 left in the half to narrow the lead to 3-1. "That was a big goal as it gave us some momentum going into the second half." The second half was a different story. Marshall came out very fired up and took the play right to St Joe. Mindi Winnie scored off the assist from Carly only 59 seconds into the second half and suddenly it was a game again. Both teams battled back and forth and again after a mistake by the Marshall keeper St Joe scored to push the lead back to 4-2. But Marshall was not done. "I was very proud of the way we continued to fight back after being down 3-0 and again at 4-2", said Harkey. From that point on Marshall completely controlled the game and maintained possesion in the St Joe defensive end. Freshman Katie Slaght scored her first two high school career goals with 7:32 left from a ball from Mindi and again with 3:40 on the clock off the assist from Andrea Pickleman. "We had them on the ropes and we were ready for the knock out punch but we ran out of time." said Harkey. "We played with such a fury that last 10 minutes. It was very enjoyable to watch. If we would have had five more minutes I truly think we would have won this game." Under the Sports Fest rules, in the event of a tie, the game goes immediately to penalty kicks. Both St Joe and Marshall made their first four tries and it was down to the last round. Courtney Gallihugh made a great save on St Joe's fifth attempt and Courtney's attempt to win the game was saved by the St Joe keeper. St Joe made their 6 attempt and Marshall's was again stopped by the St Joe keeper for the win and the championship. "It was just a great day for our Sports Fest. We had wonderful weather and a fantastic, entertaining game against a very quality team in St Joe. We raised over $800.00 in our Kick For A Cure" fundraiser. And I would like to commend St Joe, Jackson Western, and Delton-Kellogg for their efforts in helping us raise the money for the Jimmy V Foundation." Marshall is now 4-2 on the season.

Marshall 2 Hillsdale 0
Hillsdale put up a valiant effort but came up short 2-0 Thursday evening at the Marshall Soccer Complex. Emily Nielsen came out strong early and scored just 5 minutes into the game from nice cross from Mindi Winnie. Although Marshall controlled much of the possession Hillsdale was very physical and Marshall did not capitalize on its many chances. "We were a little flat in the first half. Coming off a tough loss against Eaton Rapids last night, I thought we were a little out of focus. There was no communication on the field and we were out of position the entire first half." Marshall had 12 shots with 7 on goal in the first half. Marshall came out with much more intensity in the second half and completely controlled the play of the game. Marshall kept the ball in their offensive end most of the half and had 14 shots in the second half. Emily had 7 shots, 3 on goal, in the half as Marshall out shot Hillsdale 26 to 2 for the game. Although Marshall dominated the overall play, Hillsdale had a great opportunity midway through the second half as they played a long ball over Marshall's defense. Marshall was called for a foul in the penalty box but Hillsdale missed the penalty kick and the score remained 1-0. Danielle Hicks finally put the game away with 7:53 left off a corner from Emily. Courtney Gallihugh attacked the keeper on the cross and headed the ball away and Danielle placed it nicely in the far right corner of the goal. Kelsie Wood received credit for her second shut out of the season as Marshall improves to 3-1.

Marshall 1 Eaton Rapids 2
Eaton Rapids took advantage of a Marshall miscue and beat Marshall 2-1 at Eaton Rapids on a windy Wednesday evening. Marshall used the wind in the first half and created several good opportunities in the Eaton Rapids box but could not finish the play. Emily Nielsen led the first half attack with 3 shots and Marshall's defense of Andrea Pickelman, Roni Ranville, and Jules Hinske limited Eaton Rapids to three shots. Late in the first half Eaton Rapids scored but it was nullified by an offsides call. The teams went into half time tied at 0-0. "We came out very focused and aggressive in the first half." said Coach Harkey. "Our midfield and forwards were very creative and we put some good pressure on the Eaton Rapids defense but we just couldn't finish. You have to give their defense a lot of credit. They really shut us down in the box." The second half turned out to be a tough physical duel as both teams battled for control of the game. In the 20th minute Eaton Rapids star forward hit a beautiful left footed shot to the top left corner of the goal to break the deadlock and take a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later after a Marshall miscue, Eaton Rapids again found the net to take a 2-0 lead. "I was very proud of our girls. They could have hung their heads after that second goal but they didn't and they fought their way back into the game." Marshall had several scoring opportunities in the last ten minutes and continued to pressure the Eaton Rapids defense. With 1:08 left in the game, Carly Weck finally broke through after a nice pass from Meg Dubois and beat the on rushing keeper. With less than 20 seconds remaining Emily had a chance to tie the game from 25 yards out but her free kick was saved by the Eaton Rapids keeper. "It was a tough physical game and our girls handled it well. We played very well against a very good team. They have 4 highly skilled players that caused us trouble all evening but we did a nice job of containing them. Take out that mistake and it's a draw. Although we didn't get the result we wanted, I am very happy with our play." Marshall out shot Eaton Rapids 12-8 with 7 shots on goal. Kelsie Wood had 4 saves as Marshall's record drops to 2-1.

Marshall 8 Battle Creek Central 0
Danielle Hicks led the way with three goals as Marshall dominated BC Central 8-0 Wednesday evening at Battle Creek. Danielle scored one minute and 9 seconds into the game off a cross from Jordan Starring and Marshall did not look back. Danielle scored her second goal with 13:20 left in the first half and Marshall then scored four goals in the last ten minutes to close the half with a 6-0 lead. Emily Townsend score her first career goal with 10 minutes left and was followed by Danielle's third goal and two goals by Emily Nielsen. All were unassisted. Carly Weck scored the final two goals the second coming at 20:41 of the second half from an assist from Mindi Winnie to end the game 8-0. "We are definitely much more offensive minded this year." said Coach Harkey. "We are playing well as team and we have a lot of girls who can put the ball in the net. There is a lot of enthusiasm and chemistry between the girls and they really want to do well. That combination makes it fun to be a coach." Marshall out shot Central 31 to 0 and had 13 shots on goal. Marshall also had 8 corners and 4 fouls. Courtney Gallihugh and Ashley Esselink were in goal for Marshall who start the season 2-0.

Marshall 7 Vicksburg 0
Marshall opened the 2009 spring season with a bang on Friday night with a convincing 7-0 win at home against Vicksburg. Marshall was on the attack from the opening whistle as Mindi Winnie started the scoring just 6 minutes into the game off a cross from Danielle Hicks. One minute later Carly Weck tallied the second goal of the game from an assist from Emily Nielsen and Marshall was on its way to its first win over Vicksburg in several years. With 20 minutes left in the half Weck assisted on Meg Dubois' first goal of the season to make it 3-0 and four minutes later, Emily Nielsen poked a goal past the Vicksburg keeper after a pass from Ashley Metzgar. "We have had a very good two weeks of practice and it showed throughout the first half." said Coach Harkey. "We are very fast and athletic and we created many chances with our speed. One of our weaknesses in the past has been scoring so we made a concerted effort these past two weeks on being creative and putting the ball in the net." The second half started the same as Emily Nielsen squashed any hope for a Vicksburg comeback by scoring 2 minutes in from Hicks' second assist of the game. Ashley Metzgar scored her first career goal with 8 minutes to play with the assist going to Suzy Grant. Weck ended the scoring with 1 minute to go off a nice run from Andrea Pickelman. "We played with a nice combination of speed and aggressiveness that kept Vicksburg off balance the entire night." said Harkey. "There are 11 seniors on this team that want to end their athletic career on a high note and they were very focused tonight. It was a good start to our season." Marshall outshot Vicksburg 15 to 5 and had 7 corners. Marshall was called for 9 fouls to Vicksburg's 1. The defense of Andrea Pickelman, Jules Hinske, Roni Ranville, and Shannon Russell played a solid game in limiting the Vicksburg attack. Kelsie Wood recorded her first shut out of the season as Marshall starts the season 1-0.

Marshall 0 Chelsea 4
Marshall's season came to an end in the first round district game at Eaton Rapids with a 4-0 loss to 6th ranked Chelsea. Marshall came out very focused and played Chelsea even in the early going. Marshall was content to play a conservative game to try and slow down the high powered Chelsea team. Chelsea controlled much of the possession in the first half but it was possession in the midfield and not their attacking zone. "Chelsea is extremely well-skilled and fast and are very good in the open field. We wanted to force them to play a possession game," said Coach Harkey. "In the first half I thought we did an excellent job of doing just that." Chelsea finally broke through the stingy Marshall defense with 14:31 left in the first half when Chelsea junior Brooke Ehman dribbled through two Marshall defenders and hit a beautiful shot by keeper Kelsie Wood for the 1-0 lead. Marshall also had some opportunities in the offensive end in the first half. The best came when Emily Nielsen forced a corner kick. Emily's corner was a nice high ball that just missed Abby Longhurst and was cleared by the Chelsea defense. On several other ocassions Marshall had the ball in the box but could not create a good shot. The first half ended at 1-0 with Chelsea out shooting Marshall 4 to 2. "Our girls played an outstanding game the first half. We came up with a game plan and they executed it to perfection. Being down 0-1 at the half was right where we wanted to be." Chelsea broke the game open only 2:38 into the second half as Ehman beat the Marshall defense again and crossed the ball to freshman Ana Rode who booted it to the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. "That early goal in the second half was a back breaker," continued Harkey. "But you have to give our girls credit. They did not fold and continued to play very hard." Midway through the second half Marshall was forced to change its game plan and became more aggresive at the offensive end. Marshall again created several opportunities that put pressure on the Chelsea defense but they stood up to the challenge. Chelsea seized control of the game late and scored their last two goals with 10:56 and 7:40 left in the game. "I am very proud of this team. We came up here with the intention of winning this game and we played a great game against a very good team. We walked off that field a proud group of Redhawks." Marshall ends its season at 8-10-1.

Marshall 2 Loy Norrix 3
Loy Norrix scored the game winner with 1:46 left in the game to beat Marshall 3-2 and win the Black Division Championship. Marshall ends the SMAC season with a 10th place finish. This was a very wide open exciting soccer game where both teams played well. Both teams came out of the gate very strong. Both created good opportunities early. Loy Norrix has several very skilled players including Junior Hannah Labadie who is participating in the Olympic Development Program. Marshall struck first after Mindi Winnie crossed a ball from the wing that was misplayed by the Norrix keeper and Emily Nielsen was there for the rebound and the 1-0 lead. Loy Norrix lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out after a controversial foul on Marshall. Labadie drilled it to the upper left corner and the 1-1 tie. Marshall again responded with 3:25 left in the first half when Abby Longhurst took a throw in from Shannon Russell turned and lofted a ball over the Norrix keeper's head for the 2-1 lead. After another questionable foul to the right of the penalty box, Labadie hit another beautiful shot that was just out of reach of Kelsie Wood. Kelsie touched the ball to the crossbar and gathered it in but the referee said it crossed the goal line and the game was even at the half 2-2. Marshall out shot Norrix in the first half 4 to 2. "That was a very well played 1st half. Our defense played excellent against their open style offense. Their forwards and mids do a nice job of creating runs but we marked them well and they were never really able to get off a good shot. Their two goals were the result of some questionable calls but give Labadie credit for putting them in." The second half was more of the same wide open soccer. Loy Norrix continued its offensive penetration but Marshall created many opportunites with some well executed counter attacks. Marshall was called for several offsides that thwarted a number of their opportunities. "We did a great job defending and then counter attacking in the second half. We were very aggressive and got caught offsides. But I liked our play." Both teams again had several chances in the second half and it wasn't until 1:46 left in the game that Norrix finally capitalized. Loy Norrix took a corner kick and it cleared the defense to the other side. A Norrix player was able to win possession and crossed it back to the front of the goal and it was headed in for the game winner. "This was a disappointing loss in the fact that we had our chances to beat a very good opponent. On the other hand I am very pleased with our play. We are doing some good things out there and this was a good game in preparation for our district game against Chelsea. Norrix's forwards and midfielders are very skilled and quick and they play a similar style to Chelsea. Our defenders and mids did a nice job of marking and stopping their penetrating runs and then we were quick and aggressive in our counter attacks. This was a fun game to be involved with." Marshall plays Chelsea, ranked #6 in the state, at 6:00pm at Eaton Rapids next Tuesday May 27th. The team asks that everyone attending the game wear red and black.

Marshall 2 Harper Creek 0
In the second round of the SMAC tournament, Marshall again got some redemption as they beat Harper Creek 2-0 to move into the Black Division championship game against Loy Norrix on Wednesday. On April 28th Harper Creek beat Marshall 2-1 on a penalty kick in what was at the time a very disappointing loss for Marshall. Not this time around. Marshall was on the attack from the outset and just 11 minutes into the game Abby Longhurst took a throw in from Mindi Winnie and manuevered her way for a left footed shot to the far post for an early 1-0 lead. "We were very determined not to have an emotional letdown," said Coach Harkey. Marshall beat Kalamazoo Central 2-0 in a rematch last Wednesday and Harkey said the girls really wanted this game as well. Marshall continued to be the aggressor throughout the entire half and out shot Harper 11 to 0 to take the 1-0 lead into half time. The Beavers came out very aggressive to start the second half and created a couple of shots that were saved by Kelsie Wood. But Marshall's defense was very stingy and did not allow Harper any real good opportunities the rest of the way. With 14:03 left in the game, Emily Nielsen took in a cleared ball at the center line and played a nice ball to freshman Carly Weck who got around her defender and beat the onrushing keeper with a low hard ground ball that rolled in the net. "Our defense has played very well the last three games and we are starting to convert some opportunities on the offensive end as well," said Harkey. "We moved Emily and Carly up top as forwards and they have responded." Defenders Andrea Pickelman, Roni Ranville, Morgan Long, Shannon Russell, Suzy Grant, and keeper Kelsie Wood have combined for three straight shut outs. Marshall out shot Harper Creek 17 to 2 for the game and improves to 8-7-1.

Marshall 1 Harper Creek 0
In another rematch game Marshall's Birttany Kyser scored the game winner late in the second half off an assist from Ashley Metzgar to beat Harper 1-0. Marshall and Harper had previously tied 1-1 earlier in the year. Marshall won despite losing 6 girls early in the second half. Kate Belew, Samantha Corcoran, Carson Tobias, Anna Eshuis, Jonni McCray, and Laura Karr had to leave 10 minutes into the second half to play in an orchestra concert. Shortly thereafter a Marshall player received a yellow card so for the next 10 minutes Marshall had to play one player short. Despite all this, Marshall found a way to record its 11th and most impressive win of the season. Marshall is now 11-0-2.

Marshall 2 Kalamazoo Central 0
Emily Nielsen scored two goals to lead Marshall to a 2-0 win at Kalamazoo Central in the first round of the SMAC tournament. Marshall came out very focused and played well the entire game. Marshall created several opportunities early with Emily getting 4 shots. Emily finally finished one for Marshall with 15:16 left in the first half. Abby Longhurst played a beautiful through ball to Emily down the right side who took it in stride, got around the K-Central defender, and then beat the keeper to the top of the net for the 1-0 lead. Marshall had 5 shots in the first half with 2 shots on goal. K-Central managed three shots with Kelsie Wood making 2 saves. Marshall picked up their intensity in the second half and again controlled much of the play. Emily Nielsen led the way in the second half as well as she fired off 3 more shots and scored with 23:48 left in the game to put it out of reach. This goal was the result of a ball played forward by Mindi Winnie and Emily drilling a shot that bounced off a K-Central defender into the goal. "Emily played with a level of intensity and enthusiasm I have not seen from her before," said Coach Harkey. "Everyone else fed off that and we played well the entire 80 minutes. The defense played very well as Central was not able to create much of anything, never getting off a good shot." Marshall out shot K-Central 13 to 5 and had 5 corners to Central's 2. Kelsie Wood made 2 saves and got credit for her fifth shut out of the year. Marshall is now 7-7-1 on the year and plays at Harper Creek next Monday in the second round.

Marshall 8 Onsted 0
On a night where the parents of all the varsity players were honored, Marshall celebrated the evening with a convincing win against Onsted 8-0. Before the start of the game, each player presented her parents with a flower and the program thanked each varsity parent for their support. Meg Dubois started the scoring spree after 10 minutes after a long ball assist into the box from Shannon Russell. Meg made a great first touch and turned and hit the upper right corner to beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Five minutes later Mindi Winnie beat the keeper on a nice pass from Abby Longhurst for a 2-0 lead. At 22:04 Onsted was called for a hand ball in the box and Meredith Leininger drilled the penalty kick to make it 3-0. Three minutes later Mindi scored her second goal by heading in a cross from Jordan Starring. At 17:46 Meredith and Abby teamed up again to make it 5-0 and at 10:48 Meredith got her hat trick after an assist from Jordan Starring. With only 18 seconds left in the first half Jordan also got into the scoring column after Abby got credit for her third assist to make it 7-0. After just 1:25 into the second half Carly Weck, playing in her first varsity game after being called up from the JV, received a nice pass from Jordan, got around her defender to the front of the goal, and beat the keeper with a nice placed ball to the right post. "On a beautiful spring night where spirits were high and many thanks were exchanged, the girls played inspired and enthusiastic soccer," said Coach Harkey. "We did all the things we needed to do and we played with a sense of enjoyment and fun. There were also a number of alumni in the stands so it was nice to put on such a fine performance in front of them. We are looking forward to the start of the league tournament because we feel we have some things to prove." Marshall improves to 6-7-1.

Marshall 1 Stevensville-Lakeshore 4
Marshall lost this non-divisional SMAC west crossover match to Stevensville-Lakeshore 4-1 Wednesday night at Marshall. For the second consecutive game Marshall lost a game where they controlled much of the action but failed to convert on its offensive end. Marshall continues to create opportunities but has problems finishing at the goal. Marshall outshot Lakeshore 16 to 8 and had 10 corners to Lakeshores' 1. Shots on Goal were even at 7. Lakeshore opened the scoring early as they converted on a free kick from 25 yards out 7:41 into the game. Marshall's defense failed to mark a Lakeshore forward as she got free inside the box. The ball played off her shoulder and was directed past Kelsie Wood for the 1-0 lead. The remainder of the first half was an even affair with both team getting 4 shots. Marshall came out with a very high level of intensity to start the second half. Just 3:37 into the second half Abby Longhurst played a ball out wide to Hannah Richardson who drilled a line drive over the keeper's head just under the crossbar to even the score at 1-1. Abby and Hannah again combined several minutes later for another great opportunity. Abby dribbled around two Lakeshore defenders and played a ball through to Hannah whose shot was just wide of goal. Minutes after that Emily Nielsen crossed a ball on the ground right across the goal mouth but there was no Marshall player there. "We played some fantastic soccer during that stretch early in the second half," said Coach Harkey. "We were first to every ball. We were distributing quickly. We were making some beautiful crosses to the front of the goal. But as has been the case all year we can't put it in when it counts the most." At 24:33 Lakeshore created a well developed counter attack and scored to take the 2-1 lead. Although Marshall fell behind they continued to attack and had other chances to tie the game. Then with Marshall pushing forward Lakeshore score two breakaway goals in the final 15 minutes to seal the victory. "I am not too concerned with those last goals," said Harkey. "We were moving and attacking forward and we got caught numbers down and Lakeshore did well to capitalize. We will spend a lot of practice time over the next week on shooting and finishing but at this point in the season the coaches are happy with the type of soccer we are playing. We are doing some nice things out there and we will continue to get better. " Marshall drops to 5-7-1 on the season.

Marshall 0 K-Central 1
Marshall lost this non-divisional crossover game at Kalamazoo Central Monday night 1-0. In a brutally physical game Marshall held much of the play in their offensive end but could not convert that into goals as K-Central scored on a breakway with 18:26 left in the second half to capture the win. In a game marred by controversial non-calls, Marshall again created many chances to score but just could not put the ball in the goal. Hannah Richardson had an early opportunity in front of goal but missed wide and Marshall had several chances on crossed balls in the first half. "Despite the K-Central tactics of physical intimidation, I thought we handled it well and actually played some pretty good soccer," said Coach Harkey. "Scoring has been our nemesis all year." In the second half Marshall continued to apply pressure on the K-Central defense. Midway through the second half K-Central played a long ball over the Marshall defense and scored as Kelsie Wood made an attempt at a sliding save. "It's tough to have the game under control tactically but then give up a score like that," continued Harkey. But Marshall was not done. Marshall picked up where they left off and kept the ball in K-Central defensive end. Mindi Winnie had several crosses and Hannah and Jules Hinske had shots against the keeper that were saved or went wide. Abby Longhurst had two free kicks that did not find their mark. As Marshall continued to get inside the K-Central penalty area, several fouls went uncalled. "Yes, I think the referee missed some calls in the box. We have a tendency to blame the officials in this type of situation but we should have scored at least 2 or 3 goals and we didn't," said Harkey. "I told the girls that even though we lost the game, we won the battle of life because we did not stoop to our opponents' level and we did not show any disrespect to the ref. We walked off that field with our pride and dignity still intact." Marshall remains at 4 points in the SMAC seeding. Marshall record is 5-6-1.

Marshall 7 Coldwater 1
Marshall rebounded from its disappointing loss against Harper Creek by soundly defeating Coldwater 7-1 Wednesday night at the Marshall Soccer Complex. Marshall came out ready to play and it showed early as Marshall completely dominated all facets of the game. Sixteen minutes into the game Meredith Leininger took a pass from Abby Longhurst and beat the keeper for the early 1-0 lead and Marshall never looked back. Five minutes later Meredith returned the favor. After gaining possession in the box Meredith played the ball back to Abby who found the back of the net to make it 2-0. With three minutes left in the half Kay Fitzsimmons found Jules Hinske in front of the goal to increase the lead to 3-0 and with 36 seconds left Mindi Winnie crossed it to Emily Nielsen to go into half with a 4-0 lead. "The focus and energy level we played with today is what we need every game," said Coach Harkey. "We talked before the game about how good teams win games they are supposed to win. This was a game that we should have won big and we did." The second half was more of the same for Marshall continuing to control most of the possession. Two minutes into the second half Hannah Richardson and Mindi Winnie combined again as Mindi crossed a ball to the front of the goal and Hannah vollied it into the net for the 5-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later at 24:04 Meredith Leininger was credited for her second assist with a nice through ball that Kay Fitzsimmons put past the keeper for a 6-0 lead. With 19 minutes left Meredith received credit for her third assist of the game by playing a ball to the corner that was run down by Devin Dubois. Devin scored her first goal of the season by turning to goal and beating the keeper to the near post. Late in the game Coldwater played a long ball over the Marshall defense and beat keeper Kelsie Wood to the right for Coldwater's lone goal. On a similar play with 5 minutes left Kelsie charged the oncoming Coldwater player and made a great save but injured her hip on the play. Her status is day to day. "Kelsie will see the trainer tomorrow and we will know more about her status at that time," said Harkey. "I think the girls understand after this week how important it is to be ready to play every game. We have a tough game on Friday at Williamston and we begin the crossovers next week. I think this team is now ready to play the rest of the year with great intensity." Marshall out shot Coldwater 43 to 2 with 25 of those on goal. The Coldwater keeper was credited with 18 saves. Marshall ends the SMAC East season in 4th place with 4 points and a record of 1-2-1. Marshall is 5-5-1 overall.

Marshall 1 Harper Creek 2
Marshall suffered the proverbial emotional letdown on Monday night at Harper Creek by losing to the Beavers 2-1. After playing the game of their season against their rival Lakeview last Wednesday, Marshall could not find the emotional energy to compete with Harper Creek. Harper Creek came out from the very beginning showing that they wanted the game more than Marshall. Harper Creek was more aggressive and more physical and capitalized on Marshall's lack of focus. Thirteen minutes into the game Harper Creek scored to take the early 1-0 lead. "As soon as we got off the bus, I turned to my assistants and said we were in trouble", said Coach Harkey. "You could just see that the girls were not focused. I think they took this Harper team for granted." Marshall did regroup for a brief period during the early part of the second half. With 34:55 on the clock, Mindi Winnie made a beautiful cross where Hannah Richardson collected it and drilled a shot past the Beaver keeper to even the score at 1-1. But the celebration was short-lived. Twelve minutes later the Marshall defense was called for a penalty and Harper Creek took the lead on a penalty kick 2-1. Marshall finally decided to play with some intensity in the last 7 minutes as they created several opportunities to tie the game. Jules Hinske got free on a breakaway and scored the apparent equalizing goal with one second remaining in the game but it was denied as the referee called her offsides. "Inconsistency has been a problem all season," said Harkey. "For the girls to play with such heart and determination one game and then turnaround and play with no emotion at all the next game is a coach's dilemma. I told them after the game that they got what they deserved. We have to give Harper credit. They just wanted this game more than we did." Harper out shot Marshall 13 to 10 with shots on goal at 5 to 3. Harper had 5 corners to Marshall's 2. Kelsie Wood had 4 saves in goal. Marshall drops to 0-2-1 in the SMAC East and 4-5-1 overall.

Marshall 0 Lakeview 0
After 110 minutes of soccer, SMAC East rivals Marshall and Lakeview had to settle for a 0-0 draw in a highly competitive, very physical game. Lakeview came out of the gates strong and did have much of the play early. Lakeview had 4 shots in the first half with Kelsie Wood making two saves. Lakeview also had 7 corners to 1 for Marshall. Mindi Winnie and Andrea Pickeleman did manage to get off shots for Marshall but both were wide of goal. "We struggled a little early in the game but once we settled down I thought we matched their intensity well," said Coach Harkey. In The second half both teams showed tremendous courage and passion on the field. Although both teams had numerous opportunities, the defenses shut down every chance. Late in the second half, Marshall began to take control and created several opportunities in the box. Mindi Winnie and Abby Longhurst got inside the Lakeview defense on two occasions but could not get a good shot on goal. Mindi also had a great opportunity as she got behind the Lakeview defense but they recovered to stop the threat. Lakeview had 4 shots to Marshall's 3 in the second half. "That was the best defense our girls have played all year. Lakeview never really got a good shot on goal until the overtime," said Harkey. "Andrea and Roni played with an aggression that was contagious. I would have to say that was the most physical I have seen a Marshall team play in a long time." The game opened up during the two overtime periods. Emily Nielsen created several chances with her individual attacks to the goal and Meg Dubois had a shot on goal that was denied by the Lakeview keeper. Lakeview's best chances came in the second overtime when they received a free kick from 25 yards out. Grace Labrecque struck a beautiful ball that curled over the wall but Kelsie Wood tipped the ball over the crossbar for the save. Three minutes later Labrecque was at it again after she got behind the Marshall defense. Andrea chased her down and forced her to shoot early and Kelsie again made a game saving stop by again tipping the ball over the crossbar. The game ended 0-0. "What a great game to be involved in. It was a typical Marshall-Lakeview battle to the end," concluded Harkey. "If we can continue to play with that kind of intensity and passion, it will be a rewarding year for all of us." Marshall is now 4-4-1 and 0-1-1 in the SMAC East.

Marshall 0 Sturgis 2
Marshall's three game winning streak came to a screeching halt Monday night as Sturgis came to town and won this SMAC East showdown 2-0. Marshall began the game with a lot of intensity and emotion and controlled much of the play for the first fifteen minutes. Marshall created several chances and had three early shots as the momentum was clearly with the Redhawks. "We played well the early part of the game", said Coach Harkey "We were playing the field well and were keeping our shape and maintaining possession. Then suddenly, our wind went out of our sails." At the 16:51 mark of the first half Sturgis struck first. After a crossed ball was not cleared, Sturgis attacked the loose ball and beat Kelsie Wood for the go ahead goal. Sturgis then took control and never relinquished it. With 5:54 left in the half Sturgis scored again. A Sturgis shot was tipped by Kelsie and it struck the crossbar and came down in front of the goal and Sturgis was again first to the ball to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. "That second goal was a result of our play during the latter half of the first 40 minutes," continued Harkey. "They were the aggressors and they won all the 50-50 balls. The result was a 2-0 lead." Sturgis continued to control the play with their aggressiveness during much of the second half as Marshall appeared a step slow and out of sinc offensively. Sturgis' defense was outstanding as Marshall managed only 1 shot in the second half. Sturgis out shot Marshall 10 to 4 as Kelsie had 6 saves in goal. There were 17 fouls called during the second half, 8 on Marshall. "We lost that high level of energy we had in the previous game and the first part of this game. Sturgis played very hard and we did not match their aggressive play. We are disappointed but this team will rebound and we will continue to improve." Marshall drops to 4-4 and 0-1 in the SMAC East.

Marshall Sports Fest Championship
Marshall 1 St Joe 0
In the championship game Marshall overcame its early morning blues and played an outsanding game against a very good St. Joe team and captured the Sports Fest Championship with an impressive 1-0 win. In a highly competitive game, Marshall freshmen Meg Dubois and Jules Hinske combined to score the game winner with 23:07 left in the second half. Jules won a 50-50 ball at midfield and headed it forward to Meg who took it in stride and outran the St Joe defender. In a one on one duel, Meg beat the sliding Bear keeper to the top of the net for the only score of the game. Marshall then sat back and played solid defense for the last 15 minutes to thwart any St Joe attack. The Marshall defense played an excellent game in shutting down the very fast, athletic St Joe offense. The defense limited the Bear offense to 6 shots while keeper Kelsie Wood made 4 saves. "Prior to this game our defense has not played up to standard," said Coach Harkey. "After the disappointing game this morning I challenged the defense and they more than responded. If they can continue this type of effort, we will be tough to beat. What's even more impressive is we did it without two of our regulars, Andrea Pickelman and Hannah Richardson who were competing with the Marshall Women's Ensemble." Marshall out shot St Joe 10 to 6 and improves its record to 4-3.

Marshall 4 Delton-Kellogg 3
Marshall opened up the Marshall Sports Fest with a narrow 4-3 victory that was decided by penalty kicks. After struggling to a 2-2 draw after regulation, Marshall's Kay Fitzsimmons and Meredith Leininger drilled two penalty kicks into the back of the net to escape defeat in a tense nail-biting finish. Marshall came out very sluggish in the early 9:00am start and never gained any momentum as Delton took the early lead with 16:42 remaining in the first half. Abby Longhurst scored 6 minutes later on a corner kick by Emily Nielsen that was redirected to Abby by Roni Ranville. With 7:04 left in the half Emily took a well played ball over the Delton defense from Morgan Long and and chipped the ball over a hard charging Delton keeper to go into halftime with a 2-1 lead. "We did not play well at all during that first half." said Coach Harkey. "Our first touch was not good. Delton beat us to every 50-50 ball and we could not kick it in the ocean." The second half did not fare any better for the Redhawks. Marshall could not generate any offensive production and only managed two quality shots that were wide of goal. With 25:19 left in the game, the defense failed to clear a ball and Delton put the ball over Kelsie Wood's head to tie the game 2-2. That's the way regulation ended and with modified rules for the Sports Fest in affect, the game went directly to penalty kicks. Marshall won the toss and elected to have Delton shoot first. Each team missed their first three attempts and Delton missed its fourth. Kay Fitzsimmons put Marshall ahead 3-2 on Marshall' fourth attempt. Delton then made their final shot to tie the game 3-3. Meredith Leininger then stepped to the penalty spot and calmly put one past the keeper to win the game 4-3. "It was a very nerveracking ending to a very difficult game." said Coach Harkey. "After having played three good games to come out with this type of performance was very disappointing. The only good thing about this game is that we won. But good teams find ways to win and we'll take it." Marshall out shot Delton 11 to 3 and evened its record at 3-3.

Marshall 5 Hillsdale 1
Marshall continued its impressive play Wednesday night at Hillsdale by defeating the Hornets 5-1. On the opening kick off, Marshall moved the ball quickly down field and Hannah Richardson played a cross directly in front of goal that was finished by left winger Mindi Winnie after only 39 seconds had come off the clock. Hillsdale answered seven minutes later with a long shot that was carried by the 20 mile an hour gusts into the top of the goal. Emily Nielsen responded with 28:56 left in the half after a nice pass from Kay Fitzsimmons and beat the Hornet keeper for a 2-1 lead. Mindi then finished off the first half with a beautiful header to the far post off a corner from Emily Nielsen to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. "We have been emphasizing how important it is in the game of soccer to be able to use your head effectively." said Coach Harkey. "I hope the girls can see by Mindi's goal what can be done with the head. It was a beautiful goal." Marshall continued its dominating play by controlling most of the second half possession and Abby Longhurst got her head on another Emily Nielsen corner to push the lead to 4-1 with 31:46 on the clock. Marshall had another opportunity moments later but failed to convert on a penalty kick. With 5:01 left in the game, Devin Dubois played a ball inside the box to Jules Hinske who then passed to Meredith Leininger for the final goal to end the scoring at 5-1. Marshall out shot Hillsdale 21 to 6 including 14 to 0 in the second half. Kelsie Wood received credit in goal for her second career victory. "Our first touch was not as adequate tonight but it was extremely windy and the pitch was very rough." said Harkey. "But I do hope these last three games are an indication of where our offensive production is headed. We have done a nice job of creating opportunities from balls on the ground not just the long flighted balls. We are defonitely moving in the right direction." Marshall has been able to get 23, 20 and 21 shots in the last three games. Marshall improves to 2-3.

Marshall 1 Eaton Rapids 2
After an eleven day lay off, Marshall resumed action in a non-conference match against Eaton Rapids on a beautiful but crisp Monday night at the Marshall High School Soccer Complex. Although Marshall played its finest soccer of the young season, Eaton Rapids pulled out a tough battle by beating Marshall 2-1. Both teams came out aggressive and had some good opportunities to score early. Marshall out shot the Greyhounds 8 to 6 in the first half but could not find the back of the net. "It was a tough physical game and I thought we did some good things out there", said Coach Harkey. "At times we played really good soccer". The game remained tied until 5:47 left in the first half when Eaton Rapids capitalized on a tentative play by the Marshall defense and rushed the Marshall goal to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Marshall showed early in the second half why Coach Harkey is very high on this team. Marshall's front four of Emily Nielsen, Hannah Richardson, Jules Hinske, and Mindi Winnie put terrific pressure on the Eaton Rapids defense. After just 2:48 into the second half, Emily played a ball to the corner where Hannah beat her defender and drilled a beautiful low driving shot past the Greyhounds keeper. Marshall continued the attack and reeled off 7 shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half. "We played at such a high intensity level early in that second half that it was somewhat disheartening to the girls that we could not score more than one goal", continued Harkey. "It was very fun to watch and it shows the promise of what these girls can do and how well they are capable of playing." Although Eaton Rapids regained some of the momentum and scored the game winner off a corner kick with 18:44 left in the game, Marshall continued to create several more opportunities down the stretch that would have tied the game. "The difference in this game was mistakes. We made two crucial errors and they took advantage of both" concluded Harkey. "But I like where we're at." Marshall out shot Eaton Rapids 12 to 5 in the second half and 20 to 11 for the game. Hannah led the way with 5 shots while Abby Longhurst and Jules had 3 each. Others with shots were Andrea Pickelman, Meg Dubois, Emily Nielsen, Meredith Leininger, and Mindi Winnie. Kelsie Wood had 7 saves in goal. Marshall falls to 1-3.

Marshall recovered and created several opportunities in the latter part of the second half. Hannah Richardson, Jordan Starring and Abby Longhurst each had shots in the first half. Vicksburg had 11 total shots in the first half but did not score until 3:57 left in the first half. A crossed ball was not cleared and was kicked in over goalkeeper Kelsie Wood's head. "I thought we played a very good game in the first half. We matched their physical style of play" said Coach Harkey. "We put together some nice combinations and attacked their defense well. Vicksburg scored on a drive from 20 yards out at the 30:57 mark and controlled much of the play for the rest of the game. Marshall's Meredith Leininger did get off a shot but it was wide of goal.
