Marshall Girls Suffer ACL Injuries

This is in response to the 5 ACL injuries that have occurred during the past 13 months to our young female athletes here at Marshall High School. This is an alarming number and is part of a national trend that has been well publicized, that young women seem to suffer more ACL injuries than do young men. As a father of a young female athlete and coach of the high school girls' soccer team I have a vested interest in this growing problem.

Over the past twenty years sports participation by girls has grown significantly. Young female athletes have become bigger, stronger, and faster and the level of competition has continued to rise. Unfortunately, so has the incidence of ACL injuries. All female athletes, parents of female athletes, and coaches of female athletes should be concerned and need to educate themselves in ACL injury prevention.

There have been numerous studies on why women tend to have more ACL injuries than men with no real definitive conclusions. There is one common thread though and it lies in how to reduce the incidents of ACL injuries in women. All studies emphasize that the best way to reduce ACL injuries is through proper injury prevention. Female athletes need to put more of an emphasis on proper physical training that includes a warmup, stretching, strengthening, plyometrics, and sports specific agility exercises. All these are important in developing the strength, coordination, and stabilization of the knee. It is no longer adequate to just run to get into shape.

Yes, I know the old saying, injuries are a part of playing sports, but we need to take it one step further. Although the studies provide no concrete data as to why, it is a clear fact that young female athletes are more susceptible to this injury. Please, athletes and parents take the time to educate yourself, and more importantly, take the time for prevention. If you would like more information about injury prevention programs and exercises or have any questions please feel free to contact me at the high school at
